I hate that I’m being forced to tutor you in English and keep it a secret from everyone. Because otherwise it might put our basketball team’s chances at winning State in jeopardy, and even though I hate you, I love basketball.
I hate that it seems like you’re keeping a secret from me…and that the more time we spend together, the less I feel like I’m on solid ground. Because I’m starting to realize there’s so much more to you than meets the eye. Underneath it all, you’re real.
But what I hate most is that I really don’t hate you at all.

“He shoots, he scores!” Hudson threw his arms up over his head in celebration.
“Nice shot, Hud.” I ruffled his hair before reaching down and grabbing the small foam basketball from the floor. He’d given me the hoop suctioned to the back of my bedroom door for my last birthday. Due to his condition, we couldn’t hit the court together, but we could shoot hoops in my bedroom.
“Can I ask you a question?” Hudson reached for the ball butheld it in his lap instead of trying for another basket.
“Sure, buddy. What’s up?”
He tilted his head up. “Do you like Wren?”
It felt like the air had suddenly been sucked out of the room. “Ah, um, well.”
“She’s really nice and she’s a top row smiler.” He shrugged his little shoulders. “Seems like a good fit to me.”
“You’re right, she is really nice, and she does have a great smile.” Heat spread across my cheeks. He’s so intuitive. How is he only nine years old?
“So, do you like her or what?” Hudson tossed the ball into the air and caught it with both hands.
I plucked at a loose thread on the hem of my shirt. “It’s complicated.”
Hudson shook his head. “That sounds like something adults say when they don’t want to tell the truth.”
“You’re right.” I chose my next words carefully. “I do like her… I’m just not sure if that’s going to be good enough.”
Hudson blinked slowly as he processed what I just said. “Why wouldn’t liking her be good enough? Why don’t you just tell her that you like her?”
“I’ve made some pretty big mistakes and I need to fix those mistakes before I tell her how I feel.” A heavy sensation settled over my chest.
His eyebrows raised. “What kind of mistakes?”
Knock, knock, knock.
My dad opened the door and popped his head around. “Boys, dinner’s ready.”
Phew… Saved by the knock.
“You need to get things straight,” Hudson said as he dunked the ball into the eye-level hoop on the way out of my bedroom. “Wren is like ten bazillion times cooler than Marissa.”
“You’re right, buddy. I will.”
“Promise?” He asked.
I wanted nothing more than to set things straight with Wren but doing so would risk everything.
“Fuller?”
I swallowed the growing lump in my throat. “Promise, buddy.”
