Release Day Release ft. Review + Giveaway—Waterfall Effect by K.K. Allen

Release Date: February 28, 2018
Cover Design: Sarah Hansen / Okay Creations

Synopsis

Lost in the shadows of a tragedy that stripped Aurora June of everything she once loved, she’s back in the small town of Balsam Grove, North Carolina, ready to face all she’s kept locked away for seven years. Or so she thinks.
As one of the victims of a string of mysterious disappearances in the small, picturesque Appalachian Mountain town, darkness has become her home—her safe blanket when the world reveals its true colors. But as the walls of darkness start to move in on her, she knows the only way to free herself from her past is to face it, head-on. She just needs to figure out how. Upon arrival, Aurora isn’t expecting her first collision to be with the boy she left all those years ago. The boy who betrayed her trust with no regrets. The boy who is no longer a boy, but a man with the same stormy eyes that swept her into his current before she ever learned to swim. She’d thought he was safe. He’d thought their path was mapped out. Turns out neither of them was ready for the crash at the bottom of the cascade.

Goodreads

Review:

“Even heroes have their weaknesses.”

K. K. Allen has quickly become an author where I don’t even have to read the synopsis to know I’ll fall in love with the beautiful way she has with words. After Up in the Treehouse, I said I’d follow her anywhere. And here we are with Waterfall Effect—a story that’s about forgiveness, redemption, and love. It’s always about love. Then there’s me—the one whose fallen so deeply, I don’t know how to get back up. Do I even want to? Regardless, THIS IS A STORY you mustn’t skip. For so many reasons but the main one being that the writing is simply poetic and beautiful.

“My mind is spinning when I give in to the memories of the boy that made my heart beat against my chest the way the water beats against the boulders.”

Aurora is the center of trauma and scandal from being taken, held captive, and left for dead by the hands of a monster. Resulting in Aurora becoming terribly broken. Leaving behind her home, the only boy she ever loved, Aurora seeks life elsewhere as she tries to pick up the shattered pieces of her heart. Then six years later, she’s back and everything’s remained the same yet everything’s different. But the town wants her out—and they’ll try their damnedest to do just that. Luckily, Aurora’s a strong character and when she arrives in Balsam Grove, idle threats aren’t going to make her back down.

“He’s different than I remember in more ways than one, but the feelings swarming in my chest are all the same.”

Then there is the story of the boy she left behind, Jaxon. The love they had for each other is the kind of love thats one of kind, bone-crushing, and deeply passionate. How could two people who were always meant to be, fall apart the way they did? Even from the prologue, the story between the two was intoxicating. I HAD to know about Jaxon and Aurora and their impending downfall. Told between—past intervals—the present, with the POVs from mainly Aurora and sometimes Jax; we’re presented with a story full of raw pain, heartache, and in the end, hope.

“I wanted to fall.
To let his rapids carry me and take me over the edge. I wanted to live in his waterfall.
Not drown in his cascade.”

I fully recommend this to all readers looking for something deep and meaningful. The story deals with a heroine that suffers from anxiety and panic attacks. I thought Allen did a great job with bringing to light the realistic effects that mental health can have on a person. I too, suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. At times it can be a complete nuisance. Overall, I’m completely and utterly enchanted by the Waterfall Effect. I think readers will feel the exact same way once they’ve read through the first few pages.

“I just wanted to feel whole again. I thought it was this place that made me feel whole, but now I’m starting to realize it was you.”

Review—I Stop Somewhere by TE Carter

Publisher: Feiwel & Friends/Macmillan
Published: February 27, 2017
Genre: Young Adult Fiction
Source: Print ARC
Rating: 5 Stars

Blurb:
You can break a girl. You can destroy several parts of her, but a girl is made up of so many things.

Rape culture. What do you think when you hear that reference? When I hear it, my whole body gets cold and I start shaking. ‘I Stop Somewhere’ has broken me. It’s about a very real issue in our world today. Rape. It isn’t about what you wear, how you act, or what you look like; none of that matters because rape is inexcusable.

Ellie, our main character, has only ever wanted to fit in. In her freshman year of high school, she meets Caleb. He’s charming, popular, and everything a girl could ever want in a boy. It’s through him that disturbing and nefarious thoughts are going to come into play. I was filled with so much anger, rage, and ultimately, devastation. I very much thought the book was in reminisce of The Lovely Bones.

This is more on the darker side of YA, so I would take that in mind before starting. That being said, I think this is a book that should be must for all adults and young adults alike. In this day in age, with social media, bullying and intimidation make things so much worse. I hope and pray that women and men who are sexually assaulted, will continue to speak up. That’s why I especially love the #Metoo campaign. You don’t have to be scared anymore. While social media can be dark at times, it also has its uses for good.

Ellie likes to talk about all the things that make a girl in the book. So...what makes a girl? Is it the crowd she chooses to hang with? The clothes she wears? Who she dates? The type of movies she watches? It could go on and on. But the fact of the matter is that we are all the same inside. As cheesy as it sounds, it’s the truth. Another fact is that NOBODY DESERVES TO BE RAPED. Most importantly — no one deserves not to be heard.

SYNOPSIS
One break is all The Crow Brothers need and we’re about to get it.
Johnny Outlaw, rock legend and lead singer of The Resistance, is here to watch us play. But he’s not the only familiar face in the crowd—killer little body, heart-shaped face, and drop-dead gorgeous.
Hannah Nichols sitting at the bar makes it hard to concentrate, sparks already reigniting. The beauty was never a groupie and tonight she’s not here to catch our show. She came to drop a bomb. “You have a son.”
She underestimated me. I’ll prove to my son, and her, that I can be the dad he needs.
What is it about musicians? Why are they so damn sexy?
My heart was Jet Crow’s the moment he opened his sexy mouth and sang that first song. One stolen night with that man would never be enough, but I’m not here to fall into his bed. Again. I’m here to fight for custody of a son he’s never known.
There’s just one problem. Those sparks between us have become flames. If we’re not careful we’re both going to get burned.

SPARK EXCERPT
Prologue
Jet Crow
Subtle scents of cinnamon mix with the taste of whiskey on her skin. I lick her from collarbone to the back of her ear, her moans enticing me to take more than a gentle share of what I want.
I’m well past hooking up with groupies, but something drew me to the beautiful brunette. Under the bright spotlight of that stage, my eyes found hers as I sang about finding the missing piece of me. Maybe it was the way she pretended to not care, catching my eyes and then turning away as if she was too shy to come speak to me, but too good to be bothered. It didn’t matter. I was already caught up in her as much as she was caught up in me.
The set ended and I made my way over to the mystery woman, the one who hid in the dark of the bar just as two shots were served. I took the shot of Fireball and then took her home shortly after.
Fuck. She feels good.
Hard little body, but soft in all the right places. Tits that fill my large hands and legs that spread enough for me to squeeze between her thighs. I bet she wouldn’t reach my shoulders in heels. Speaking of, “Keep them on.”
I like the feel of the leather against my lower back, the hard heel scraping across my skin when she tries to power play me by tightening around my waist and pulling me closer. I didn’t ask her to my bedroom. I didn’t have a chance. What started out as laughing while we shared a two a.m. snack of Cheetos, hummus, and whiskey turned into me eating her as a snack on top of my kitchen counter. I don’t ever do that with a one-nighter, but damn if she didn’t make me want to break more rules with her.
She kisses me like a woman in need of water, taking as much as she wants while pressing her heels into my ass. The heat between us emanates until I’m dragging my shirt off to try to cool down.
I knew she was different the moment she opened her mouth back at the bar. “You sing rock with so much soul. Who hurt you?”
“No one gets close enough to do me any harm.”
“That’s a pity.”
“It’s a pity I’ve never been hurt?”
“No, it’s a pity you’ve never loved anyone enough to get hurt.”
My heart started beating for what felt like the first time as I looked into her sultry eyes. I could blame the booze, but I can’t lie to myself. She had me thinking twice on things I never considered once before.
Who was this woman?
Even with our stomachs full, we weren’t satisfied. She dragged me by the belt down the hall to my bedroom. Her clothes were off and mine quickly followed before we tumbled into bed.
Fast. I want to fuck her fast and hard, but every time our eyes connect there’s such sadness found in her grays that I slow down. Wanting her to hold contact, I cup her cheek. “Hannah?”
Her eyes slowly open, the long lashes framing the lust I find between them. “What?” she asks between heavy breaths.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m good.”
“Just making sure.”
She runs her hands up my neck and into the back of my hair. “I’m sure.” Pulling me down to her, our mouths are just a few inches apart when she whispers, “I want you. I want to do this.”
Shy isn’t something I’d call her considering we were in my bed two hours after meeting. I like a woman who knows what she wants. Hannah knows. And fuck if it isn’t a turn on that she wants me.

I’ve been stranded at the hotel bar in Vegas alone for exactly twenty seconds before a guy sidles in beside me. “Buy you a drink?” I glance up. He’s at least twenty years my senior, with pleated khakis and an obvious comb-over. I shake my head and smile tightly. “Got one, thanks.” “Aw, come on now,” he says, plunking himself down in the empty seat beside me. “You in town for the conference?” Then, in spite of the fact that I haven’t asked: “Medical devices.” His name is Greg, he continues; he sells surgical equipment and has a hundred dollar per diem he hasn’t blown through yet today, if I want to rethink that drink offer. “I’ll spring for nachos too,” he says magnanimously. “I’m a generous guy.” I’m sweeping the room for the closest exit, contemplating an escape worthy of Danny Ocean himself, when a hand lands on the back of my barstool. “Hey babe,” a deep voice says casually. “Making friends?” I whip around. This guy would look right at home with Clooney and Pitt. He’s tall and dark-haired, wearing a shirt rolled halfway to his elbows and an expression that clearly says, just go with it. “I got my ass beat at roulette,” he continues with a sheepish grin. “There goes private school for the kids, right?” He sticks his hand out to medical device guy. “Cal. The husband.” I almost choke on my paloma. Still, something about the sheer ballsiness of this particular play--and, okay, how hot this guy is--has me playing along. “Hey hon,” I say, laying a hand on his pleasantly solid bicep. “Greg here was just telling me all about the free swag at the medical device conference in town.” Greg’s gaze darts from me to Cal, then back again. “I guess I’ll leave y’all to it, then.” “Good to meet you,” I lie, smiling my cheeriest smile. Once he’s gone I turn to Cal. “So, on a scale of like, one to Disney Princess, how badly did I look like I needed rescuing?” Cal tilts his head to the side, considering. “I mean, your undisguised expression of misery kind of gave it away.” “Maybe that’s just how my face is!” I protest, laughing in spite of myself. “Resting miserable face.” “Eh. Maybe.” Cal shrugs, all confidence as he settles himself onto Greg’s recently vacated barstool. “You don’t look so miserable now.” Right away I feel my cheeks flush. It’s been a long time since I flirted—or, more accurately, since I was competently flirted with. “So how many kids do we have, exactly?” “Not too many,” he reassures me, nodding at the bartender for another beer. “Like six or seven, max.” “Six or seven!” I snort. “And here you are just gambling their lunch money away like some kind of degenerate.” Cal nods gravely. “I’m a real scoundrel,” he agrees. “Clearly.” I stick my hand out. “Jules Robinson.” “Nice to meet you, Jules Robinson.” He gives good handshake, firm but not bone-crushing, all long fingers and the faintest scrape of callus on his palm. His eyes are a deep, friendly brown. “So what brings you to Vegas?” he asks. “I’m with a girlfriend,” I explain. “Or I was, anyway. At the moment she’s out on an... exploratory mission.” Cal grins. “Sounds exhilarating.” “Oh, I’m sure it is,” I assure him. “What about you? What are you doing in town?” “Auditioning for Thunder from Down Under,” he says immediately. Then, off my laugh: ”Callback, actually. I aced the first round, they couldn’t get enough of me.” “Right, no, obviously.” The ads for the all-male revue were plastered all over the strip when we got here this afternoon: beefy, longhaired guys in bow ties, cummerbunds, and not much else. “So what’s your character?” I ask, rattling the ice in my mostly-empty glass. “Sexy fireman, sexy cop…?” “Sexy medical device salesman,” he deadpans. “See, you’re laughing, but I have a whole bit I do with the x-ray machine. It’s a real crowd pleaser.” Casino bars don’t ever really empty out, but this one is taking on a distinct after-hours vibe, low light and quiet conversations; the Bud-guzzling bachelor party bros are long gone. When I finally check my phone to see if Kelly’s texted—she has, she’s safe, and she’s having a truly epic time with her mountain man—I realize it’s after one. “Holy shit,” I blurt. “How’d it get to be so late?” Cal raises his eyebrows. “Keeping you up?” “What? No!” I blurt, immediately embarrassed by how eager I sound. “We just had an early flight out this morning, that’s all. I’ve been up for like twenty hours.” “I’m teasing you, princess.” He smiles at me then, slow and easy. It’s the most intimate smile of my entire life. It’s a smile like sitting in front of a campfire in October and reading the paper in bed on Sunday morning; it’s a smile, frankly, like getting good and fucked by a man who knows you down to your most essential particles. “You wanna get out of here?” he asks. I knew it was coming but still there’s something bracingly scandalous about the idea, being propositioned by a total stranger. I’m imagining it now, I can’t help it: that broad chest pressed against mine and his capable-looking mouth on my neck, long fingers reaching down between my legs and— “Tempting,” I tell him truthfully, laying a palm against my flaming face. “But I probably shouldn’t.” To his credit Cal keeps smiling, a little rueful; he doesn’t try to convince me, either, just touches my arm and catches the bartender’s eye to settle up. “Fair enough,” he tells me, pulling his wallet out of his back pocket. “Well, it was really nice to be married to you for five minutes, Jules Robinson.” “Yeah,” I agree, feeling my whole body get warm. “It was nice to be married to you for five minutes, too.” I’m surprised by the sharp pang of longing behind my ribs as I watch him go a moment later, the strange sense that I’ve somehow given up more than just a roll in starchy white hotel sheets. Still, it’s not like I’m about to just get up and follow him out of here. He probably does this every night, sure. But I’ve never had a one night stand in my entire life. I’ve never had a one-night stand in my entire life. The thought stops me—after all, I’m a grown-ass woman with a newly minted law degree, aren’t I? I’ve got nobody to answer to but myself. And this is Vegas. What happens here, et cetera. I swallow down the rest of my tequila, set the glass back down on the bar. “Hey Cal!” I call, slinging my purse over my shoulder and hopping down off my barstool as quickly as my tiny dress allows. “Wait up.”         VERY IRRESISTIBLE PLAYBOY (Billionaire Bachelors #1) – available now. Falling in love with your best friend's sister is never a good idea. Getting caught kissing her, that's even worse. I watched Lizzie Donovan grow up - from pigtails and scraped knees to pouty lips and lush curves. It wasn't until one night nine years ago in the front seat of her car, with her lips on mine, that I realized what I was feeling was far more than friendship. Of course, I felt her brother's wicked left hook shortly after. One promise was all it took to push her away. Not anymore. This is my chance. I have three months to convince her that she's the song in my heart and we're more than just forbidden lyrics.

The house lights dim, leaving the whole place practically in darkness. A hush falls over the crowd as if the lack of light was in control of their voices. Pretty sure we’re the only table that knows what’s about to happen. The steady beat of a drum, counting out a punishing rhythm break through the silence. A bass guitar joins in, followed closely by two more guitars. It’s a pattern I’ve heard all my life. Each instrument getting its turn to take the spotlight before coming together as a whole. A spotlight cuts through the darkness and every girl in the room loses their mind before rushing the stage. Flashes from cell phones compete against the swirling lights illuminating the dance floor. The four of them stand there, perfectly comfortable in their surroundings, taking command of the area. Kade winds at the girls in front while Myles struts his stuff along the right side of the stage. You can barely see Pax’s head above the drum set, but every once in a while, you sneak a glimpse of his smile. But that’s not what I’m focusing on. No, I’m drawn to the one standing off to the side, keeping a constant rhythm and not drawing as much attention to himself. Damn. If I thought Breck looked good sitting on a bar stool, he looks a million times better with a spotlight shining directly on him.

Don't miss the other LIGHTNING STRIKES books!

SERENADING THE SHADOWS

No one should have their life planned out at the age of three. Yet that’s exactly what happened to Adrienne Carmichael. Paving the way as the “piano prodigy” was all her parents wanted…Only she didn’t. All she wished for was to be normal, to be a regular teenager and everything that came with it—including the decisions that would shape her life. Wish granted. Ten years later, scarred and broken, she knows that being alone isn’t everything she imagined. The piano is finally everything, except nobody will ever hear her play again. All that changes when a sexy-as-sin rock god blows into her life. Tall and tattooed with jet-black hair and a dangerous bad boy smile…he’s every girl’s fantasy. To her, he's a distraction, yet Kade Evans is everything she shouldn't want. Instinct tells her to run, but she can’t get him out of her mind. But may, just maybe he can be the one to pull her from the shadows before the darkness swallows her…for good.

NOTES OF THE PAST

I love women.
And it’s easy to see why. Being the lead guitarist for the country’s hottest band, Lightning Strikes, has them practically jumping into my bed and walking out the door just as quick. Which is perfect for me. Emotions complicate things, and I don’t do complicated.
Not anymore.
Sure, I was in love once, and it was great. Then it was gone. That’s when I vowed never again. Life is better without empty, broken promises.
After five years of hard work, sacrifices, and determination, everything I’ve ever wanted is in my grasp: a successful career, touring city after city and being accountable to no one.
Then she starts appearing in the crowds. The girl I once loved, and who walked away.
Only, Tatum Mitchell wasn’t just any girl; she was my girl.
Will she be the wedge that drives the last part of my heart away, or will she break down the walls I’ve built. We’re connected through the lyrics of our heart and the notes of our past, but is that enough?

Blurb: CEO Henry Osbourne has only ever desired one woman—the one who got away. New York Times and #1 ebook bestselling author Alexa Riley returns with Don’t Go, a virgin-hero insta-love contemporary romance in the For You series
I’ve spent the past ten years convincing myself that what I felt for her was teenage infatuation. That love so consuming couldn’t be real. Then everything went to shit, and in an instant, she was gone.
Kory Summers knew returning to New York meant running into Henry. The way her heartbeat picked up at just the thought was nervousness—not anticipation. Oh, no. She never expected to find him on her doorstep looking as handsome as ever.
She’s mine. She always has been. I’ve waited this long for her…but time’s up. I’ll use all my power, all my connections, to convince her she’s the one.
Kory ran from a boy, but a man of power and persuasion now stands in his place.

Review-
‘Don’t Go’ was a short and sweet book. While it was a little too fast for my liking, I understood why it was. Henry and Kory met back in high school and had a connection that rooted the two as one. While they were from different sides of the track, Kory and Henry were able to look past that and go on a date to prom.

But then something terrible happened and they lost touch with each other for ten years. Kory left town but now she’s back. And Henry won’t let her get away this time. As I said before, the story itself was very short and easy to read. It’s also the third book in the ‘For You’ series. I haven’t read the other books but I do plan to.

Overall, this is a sexy and fast read that begs to be read. Henry is a great alpha male and Kory is the lucky lady that gets to have him!

I sit back in my desk chair and look out at the city. It’s the same window my father looked out of for longer than I can remember. I’ve been thinking about him and my mom a lot lately. They’re off on another vacation enjoying one another and life. They call and check in, but I know they’re happy traveling the world.
I’ve got a stack of papers on my desk that I need to go over, but I don’t feel like it today. For some reason, I’ve felt an ache in my chest for the past couple of days, one I haven’t felt in a long time, mostly because I’ve learned to ignore it. But the beating in my heart can’t be ignored, and my thoughts drift to Kory, just like they always do.
I rub the place between my ribs and wonder if this is exactly what my father felt like, looking out onto a city where he knew the love of his life was, but she was just beyond his reach.
For years I tried to fight it, but it never once went away. Not even for a second.
I think back to the day I asked her to the prom and how it all seemed so perfect. I picked her up at her apartment and met her mom. We laughed and held hands while we went to my aunt and uncle’s house for pictures. She looked so beautiful in her white dress. I kept thinking she looked more like a bride, and I loved it. At eighteen years old, I pictured her walking down an aisle to me, and I wanted so badly for it to be real.
But then everything went to shit, and in an instant, it was gone.
I’m my father’s son, even though I’ve spent my life trying not to be. I knew the way he was with my mom. He was out of his mind for her, and nothing else mattered. I never wanted to be that way. I didn’t want someone to have that much power over me because it was dangerous. That’s what I knew to be true. But all it took was one look at Kory and all of that changed.
It’s been years and I haven’t gotten over her. The day she disappeared was the day I lost my soul. She took it with her, and I’ve never so much as glanced at another woman since. Why would I? I might have been young, and it might have not meant anything to her, but I’ve never felt anything like it since. I knew when I was eighteen that I’d met the love of my life, but she slipped through my fingers.
