Book the way to my heart!

Sometimes I stumble across a book(s) that no doubt leave an imprint on my heart. It could be years later and yet I still think about the book as if it really happened to me. In some cases, the characters might as well be real because in hindsight, they are me. And I am them. Pain that I have struggled through with no outlet, has somehow been made easier through the written word. I'm going to show you a couple of books that not only helped me inadvertently but ones that I feel don't get enough attention. They should receive ALL the attention, if I'm being honest. Then again I may be a little bit biased ;)

If I Break series by Portia Moore
There aren't enough words in the whole entire universe where I could actively give these books justice. The first book starts off with a bang and already the reader has an idea about where the story is going. Hell, I could bet my whole life on what I knew was going on. But...I was so WRONG!!! Like 100% wrong and I never saw anything coming. The angst levels are high, so be prepared for a long rollercoaster of a ride. I cannot recommend this enough.

Blurb:
When I met Cal Scott, I knew he’d be a distraction.

At six-foot-two, with ebony hair, deep gray eyes, and a smile that could only hide an agenda, I knew he was trouble. And for the first time in my life, a little trouble was just what I needed.

No. What I wanted.

It wasn’t like I’d ever marry the guy.
Until I did.

What I thought would be my happily ever after, was only the beginning. Cal has a secret. One that makes loving him come with a price, and being his wife cost more than I bargained for.

Blurb:
Lauren Brooks fell in love with Cal Scott at 21, married him at 22 and had her heart broken at 23 when he walked out of their marriage. At 25, though raising his daughter on her own, Lauren was finally moving on with her life. Until, she learned the reason for Cal's abandonment, the walls she’d carefully built around her collapsed..

The day she meets Chris, all those feelings she thought she had bottled up come spilling out. She can’t afford to give into her heart’s desire again. Love nearly broke her once, and her daughter doesn't need two broken parents.

Christopher Scott is in love, newly engaged to Jenna, who saw him through an illness he didn’t think he could survive. He’s finally settling into the life he’s always wanted, making plans he only dared to dream before now.

Until, a woman named Lauren arrives on his doorstep.

She’s intriguing, beautiful and, try as he might, he can’t stay away. The closer he gets to her, the more his rock-solid plans begin to crumble. All he knows is that Lauren is the missing piece to a puzzle he must solve. For him to put all the pieces in place, he’ll have to follow his heart, and that might cost him everything...

Blurb:
The conclusion to the If I Break Series.

Cal’s back and his arrival changes everything.

Lauren knew it was coming but what she didn’t think he’d bring with him was an ultimatum.

A choice.

One that Lauren feels trapped under. A choice she’s unsure will make a difference but could possibly change everything.

The ultimatum isn’t the only thing Cal’s got with him but answers. The ones Lauren so desperately craves. But the truth won’t only affect the lives of he and Lauren but everyone around them…and not everyone wants the truth to come out.

The good thing is Cal doesn’t give a F…

…There's two sides to every story. In this one there’s three.

Blurb:
When you’re heartbroken, it lies beneath everything that you do. It’s in all of who you are. Foreshadows who you’ll be.

It hides underneath your smile, rests between your laugh, revels in your tears and taunts your every thought. You wish it away but are too terrified to let it go….

When Cal first disappeared I swore my heart had broken, and before all of this is over I swear it will shatter into pieces.

The First Trilogy by E.L. Todd

For these books, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed them. I thought it was different because I had never read another story line quite like it. I don't want to give too much away but I definitely recommend because I liked the hero a whole lot!

Blurb:
The man I hate lives next door.

He must have just moved in, even though I never saw the moving truck.

He's just as arrogant as I remember, mowing the lawn without a shirt and grinning like an idiot. When he catches me staring at him through the window, he winks.

So cocky.

He flirts with me like he never broke my heart.

And then he tells me something that I just can't believe.

We're married.

Blurb:
I can't believe this is real.

I've lost years of my life, years of memories.

He tells me we've been happily married for years, but I despise him so much that I can't believe that.

How did he get me to fall in love with him the first time?

And how does he expect to do it a second time?

Blurb:
He won't let me date anyone because he's the biggest cockblock in the world.

He still calls me his wife even though I don't remember our wedding day.

He said he'll never give up on me. Not now. Not ever.

Somehow, I forgave him for what he did in the past. But I'm not sure if I can do it again.

But he's not giving me much choice.

There you have it! These books are pretty awesome and I love them to pieces. Years later and I still think about them. What books are unique or different to you? Let me know in the comments below! I would love to chat <3

Review:Find Me Their Bones (Bring Me Their Hearts #2) by Sara Wolf

Publisher: Entangled Teens
Published: November 5, 2019
Genre: YA Fantasy
Source: Print ARC
Rating: 4 stars

Blurb:
No one can save her.

In order to protect Prince Lucien d’Malvane’s heart, Zera had to betray him. Now, he hates the sight of her. Trapped in Cavanos as a prisoner of the king, she awaits the inevitable moment her witch severs their magical connection and finally ends her life.

But fate isn't ready to give her up just yet.

With freedom coming from the most unlikely of sources, Zera is given a second chance at life as a Heartless. But it comes with a terrible price. As the king mobilizes his army to march against the witches, Zera must tame an elusive and deadly valkerax trapped in the tunnels underneath the city if she wants to regain her humanity.

Winning over a bloodthirsty valkerax? Hard. Winning back her friends before war breaks out? A little harder.

But a Heartless winning back Prince Lucien’s heart?

The hardest thing she’s ever done.

Review:

I’m not even gonna lie...this was a just a bit underwhelming for me in the beginning. So much so that I almost put the book down. I loved Bring Me Their Bones so much but I felt the sequel dragged at an alarming rate. Luckily, I don’t give up fast.

The story definitely picked up a bit more as it progressed. With the way the first book ended, you could bet that I was more than eager to get my hands on the second one. Zera has revealed who she is and Prince Lucien wants nothing to do with her.

Wolf’s writing is both lyrical and enchanting in every way that counts. Her books fill me with a sense of wonder and magic—for the sole fact that she can take me completely away from the world.

Zera is a strong and amazing character that I love. She’s still the same sarcastic girl with a heart of gold. Her life is definitely the kind you feel empathy for because it’s one that she was thrust into.

I can’t wait for the third book because again...THAT ENDING!

About the Author:

Have you read the first in the series Bring Me Their Hearts yet?

Blurb:
Zera is a Heartless – the immortal, unageing soldier of a witch. Bound to the witch Nightsinger ever since she saved her from the bandits who murdered her family, Zera longs for freedom from the woods they hide in. With her heart in a jar under Nightsinger’s control, she serves the witch unquestioningly.

Until Nightsinger asks Zera for a Prince’s heart in exchange for her own, with one addendum; if she’s discovered infiltrating the court, Nightsinger will destroy her heart rather than see her tortured by the witch-hating nobles.

Crown Prince Lucien d’Malvane hates the royal court as much as it loves him – every tutor too afraid to correct him and every girl jockeying for a place at his darkly handsome side. No one can challenge him – until the arrival of Lady Zera. She’s inelegant, smart-mouthed, carefree, and out for his blood. The Prince’s honor has him quickly aiming for her throat.

So begins a game of cat and mouse between a girl with nothing to lose and a boy who has it all.

Winner takes the loser’s heart.

Literally.

Review-The Bromance Book Club (Bromance Book Club #1) by Lyssa Kay Adams

Publisher: Berkley
Published: November 5, 2019
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Source: Print ARC
Rating:

Blurb:
The first rule of book club:
You don't talk about book club.

Nashville Legends second baseman Gavin Scott's marriage is in major league trouble. He’s recently discovered a humiliating secret: his wife Thea has always faked the Big O. When he loses his cool at the revelation, it’s the final straw on their already strained relationship. Thea asks for a divorce, and Gavin realizes he’s let his pride and fear get the better of him.

Welcome to the Bromance Book Club.

Distraught and desperate, Gavin finds help from an unlikely source: a secret romance book club made up of Nashville's top alpha men. With the help of their current read, a steamy Regency titled Courting the Countess, the guys coach Gavin on saving his marriage. But it'll take a lot more than flowery words and grand gestures for this hapless Romeo to find his inner hero and win back the trust of his wife.

Review:
Omggggg!! I freaking loved the absolute crap outta this. I laughed throughout the whole entire book. If you’re in need of sexy, romantic, and a laugh-out loud romance, READ THIS! And fast.

Gavin and his wife Thea are on the rocks—worse than on the rocks. She wants a divorce. So what does his best friend and a group of guys do? Well, invite him to their super secret romance book club! Where dudes struggling in relationships read and find guidance on what women want. Let’s face it, this plot and story is genius af. All I want to do is shout from the rooftop on how fun I thought the book was. From start to finish it was a hoot!

Gavin is your next book boyfriend...or husband. Yes, he’s had some minor setbacks on certain areas of his relationship. Mainly one that starts with a big O. But hey, there’s always room for learning haha. And learn he does.

The secondary characters are another reason I adored the story. I know men like this exist out there somewhere, right? Because if not, then that's such a shame. I enjoyed the Bromance so much. It was just the thing I needed to put me in a good mood!

Blog Tour Review-Meant to Be Yours (Happily Inc. #5) by Susan Mallery

MEANT TO BE YOURS
Author: Susan Mallery
ISBN: 9781335041494
Publication Date: 10/22/19
Publisher: HQN Books

Book Summary:

In Happily Inc, love means never having to say “I do”…
Wedding coordinator Renee Grothen isn’t meant for marriage. Those who can, do. Those who can’t, plan. But she never could have planned on gorgeous, talented thriller writer Jasper Dembenski proposing—a fling, that is. Fun without a future. And the attraction between them is too strong for Renee to resist. Now she can have her no-wedding cake…and eat it, too.
After years in the military, Jasper is convinced he’s too damaged for relationships. So a flirtation—and more—with fiery, determined Renee is way too good to pass up…until his flame becomes his muse.
Renee is an expert at averting every crisis. But is she finally ready to leap into the one thing that can never be controlled: love?

Review-
Friends-with-benefits that always means more in the world of romance. Why must I love this trope so much? The whole “let’s have sex and if it gets to be too much we walk away...” bit is my favorite line of the whole book.  It rarely ever stays “just sex”! At least in romancelandia. In real life...I’m sure F buddies work just fine.

“So just you and me, for as long as it’s good for us, then when it’s over, we walk away. No regrets, no bad breakup.”

Heh. Famous last words, anyone? Jasper and Renee are completely and utterly sexy from the moment they officially met. The chemistry is out of this world hot and as a reader, I could totally see what they couldn’t. Falling in love! But we have some stubborn characters. What can we do with that, yeah?

Jasper and Renee would like to convince themselves that their “relationship” is just one based on sex and friendship. They both have demons that will never allow them to have more.

Renee is a wedding planner and besides her love life; she’s well put together. Jasper is a suspense novelist that needs help writing in a love interest for his series closer. What better way to do that then ask for help from his buddy Renee?

Meant to Be Yours is one of my favorite types of romance. I felt the love, angst, and the easy way of watching two characters fall in love. It was beautiful. Jasper has made his way onto my lust of yummy book boyfriends! There’s nothing I love more than a man who treats women right.

Review-The Bookworm Crush by Lisa Brown Roberts

Publisher: Entangled Teen
Published: October 29,2019
Genre: YA Contemporary Romance
Source: Print book
Rating: 4

Blurb:
This spinoff of The Replacement Crush featuring Amy and Toff is sure to melt your heart.

Shy bookworm Amy McIntyre is about to compete for the chance to interview her favorite author, who hasn't spoken to the press in years. The only way to win is to step out of the shadows and into the spotlight, but that level of confidence has never come easy.

The solution? A competition coach. The problem? The best person for the job is the guy she's secretly crushing on…local surfer celebrity Toff Nichols.

He’s a player. He’s a heartthrob. He makes her forget basic things, like how to breathe. How can she feel any confidence around him?

To her surprise, Toff agrees to help. And he’s an excellent teacher. Amy feels braver—maybe even brave enough to admit her feelings for him. When their late night practices become less about coaching and more about making out, Amy’s newfound confidence wavers.

But does Toff really like her or is this just another lesson?

Review:

“She was a bookworm, not a daredevil.”

I feel as if I just read a book about my life—book blogger/reviewer life and all. I, too, am also way more comfortable with my nose in a book. They’re just so much easier to deal with than regular people! All jokes aside, this was beyond adorable.

Our heroine, Amy, is without a doubt my spirit animal. She’s nerdy, loves books, and she’s a major book reviewer! In order to meet her favorite author, Amy must participate in a competition. It’s where everything starts to happen. Enter Toff—the boy she secretly has a crush on but he has no idea.

"That was the problem with crushes—they weren’t rational."

One night changes everything and they decide to start a fake relationship (one of my favorite tropes!!). I enjoyed all the swoony moments that happened between Amy and Toff. The book references were so fun to read about it because let’s face it, I’m a huge booklover. Always have been and always will be!

If you’re looking for a light-hearted romance, Toff will the one you're looking for!

BLURB

Dear Jerk Across the Street, sorry for accidentally walking in on you and catching an eyeful of your—equipment. And hard pass on the open invitation to join you in the shower “anytime”, A-hole.

That’s the note I should’ve written. Instead I sent a pleasant and apologetic version.
Had I known Phoenix “Nix” Russo would’ve been the neighbor from hell, I’d have told him right where he could shove my words.

Nix is the big man on campus with everyone lined up at his games to make sure he knows it. Sure, he’s got piercing blue eyes, abs that don’t quit and a smile that could set fire to a set of panties from a hundred yards away, but he’s also the biggest pain in my ass.

Dear Pink-Haired Menace, learn how to take a joke and stop being such a kill-joy...

Elle Masterson called the cops on one of my parties—again. My sweet talking usually gets me out of trouble, but this time it got me into a nice pair of silver handcuffs. Now I’m on a reputation rehab tour with a stop at a spring break community service project.

Guess who’s my new boss?

Now we’re shoulder to shoulder, sweaty, tired and…she’s not anything like I expected. There might just be a heart under that hardass exterior. She’s invading my dreams and I can’t shake the feeling she’s the key to unlocking a piece of me that I’ve hidden away.

It’s only a matter of time until she finds out why I’m really here.

Maybe I can break through her walls and into her heart before that happens...one screw at a time.

READ CHAPTER ONE HERE: https://www.mayahughes.com/blog

The Second We Met is one of my favorite types of romance—enemies-to-lovers! There’s nothing I adore more than two people with insanely hot chemistry, try and  fight the feelings they have for each other through smart jabs and sexy tension.

I knew for a fact that Elle would be my spirit sister. Plus, her hair rocks! She’s immediately on edge otter meeting
Mr. Russo—and for good reason! Not only is he hot af but he’s also cocky and obviously thinks too highly of himself.  Is their any reason why Elle wouldn’t want to kick him where the good lord split him? Despite the fact that he’s sexy as all get out? Of course! She isn’t blind but she knows the type of man he is.

The two are water and oil. Or are they? From the outside looking in, I think they’re absolutely perfect for each other. It’s just getting both Nix and Elle to realize it for themselves that’s half the battle. What a sexy battle it is too!!

Obviously, I’m a huge fan. If you’re into enemies to lovers or plain romance in general, this is one for you! Especially if you’re the type that loves fun romance that keeps your heart racing. Nix Russo...eat your heart out!
