Excerpt:

The sound of “I love you” fills the room. My heart drops to my knees. My throat constricts; I can’t breathe. Those three words were meant for me. He doesn’t notice me standing in the doorway. He doesn’t notice the look of shock and pain that carries across my face. I can feel the tears burn, as he calls her name.

My Review:

Willow is a woman in love and couldn’t be happier in life. All of that comes crashing down, however, when she walks in on her fiancé cheating on her. Hurt and embarrassed beyond belief, she quickly leaves town and finds herself in Lake Jackson, Texas – a place that will take her completely by surprise.

Parker is someone who never has to want for anything. He has the money to do what he wants, when he wants, but even that is not enough to make him happy. Often bitter and angry, no one can really make him feel – until he sees her. He is drawn to Willow and he’s not sure why. Confused, he often lashes out at her, pushing her away. Will the two be able to find common ground together, or will their differences be enough to drive a permanent wedge between them?

Willow was a sweet girl that drove me batty at times. She spent a lot of time in her head and that made me feel a bit disconnected occasionally as it seemed to slow down the pacing of the story.

Parker was a bit more complex. This novel is a part of a series and this was Willow’s story. I’m curious to see where Parker’s story is taken next as I want more of a look into the easily angered, emotionally scarred character that I saw here. There were times that I wanted to reach into the story and smack him for some of the things that he did and said, but then there were times that I just wanted to hug him. Hey, I’m allowed to change my mind.

The side characters were some of my favorites, especially Angel, Riley and Tanner’s daughter. She was just plain adorable and there’s a scene in which she finger paints with her ice cream in a place that she really shouldn’t. It brought a smile to my face. I freaking love that child.

Taking Flight was a quick, easy read that I enjoyed. There were some things that drove me a little crazy with the pacing as I felt that we were given just a bit too much insight at times, but that could just be me.

Synopsis:

We're thirteen girls, captive, slave to our master.
A master we've never seen.
Obedience will become all we know in our shallow existence. It is the only emotion we're permitted to feel.
When we're bad, we're punished. When we're good, we're rewarded.
Our scars run deep. Yet we survive, because we have to... because HE teaches us to.
All of us are special, we feel it with everything we are.
He has us for a reason, but it's a reason we don't know.
We've never seen his face, but we know that something deeply broken lies beneath the darkness. With every touch, with every punishment, we know it.
Then something changed.
He showed me who he truly is.
Now I want him.
I'll go against everything I know to be with him.

A monster.

My monster.

Loving him is a sin, but a sinner I am. I won't stop until I see every part of him. Even the parts he keeps locked deep down inside.

I am Number Thirteen, and this is my story.
No one said it was pretty, or right, but it's mine.

Mini Teaser:

We all make mistakes as humans, and we should be punished for the mistakes that are intentional. If we do well, we should be rewarded. It’s a basic circle, and if we all followed it, we would continue to go round and round. Unfortunately, that circle has been broken far too many times for it to flow smoothly. People have become selfish, wrapped up in their own needs. They’ve become cruel and unrelenting. There is very little good left in the world.

Humanity is gone.

Gavin tries to show Clem she can handle falling in love again, but she knows she has to be careful because her heart’s at stake…and maybe even her life.

DEAREST CLEMENTINE is a stand-alone novel with two companion novels. This New Adult contemporary romance series is recommended for readers 18+ due to mature content. Look for the second book, DEAREST DANDELION, this June.

Excerpt:

The laundry room is dark when we walk in, so Gavin flips on the lights. A row of washers and dryers line both sides of the small room. He opens up a washer and dumps in his basket of clothes.

"Gavin, why are you washing clean laundry?" I can’t help the laugh that escapes.

He drops in a few quarters and starts the machine before he turns to me, grinning.

“I’m helping you get in the zone. Come here.” He wraps his hands around my waist, and I let out a surprised squeak when he lifts me up onto a washer. I can't believe he just picked me up. Okay, that's a stupid thought to have. He did carry me home two weeks ago.

His grip is firm on either side of me as he leans down to look into my eyes. I lean back slightly. He’s so far in my personal space that my shadow is crowded.

“Clementine, I want to warn you.” His voice is husky and deep. “I’m going to kiss you, and you’re going to like it. A lot. But I want to be clear that I’m not going to sleep with you because I want you to respect me in the morning.” His mouth lifts up in a wry smile. “This is simply one friend helping out another. Okay?”

Wait. Is he serious?

He must sense my apprehension because he rubs his thumb softly across my cheek. “It’s just an exercise, to get you into your story. I promise.”

I laugh, embarrassed, intrigued, and a whole lot turned on by the idea. He smiles again, but this time it’s different. His eyes darken as his hands glide over my hips. My breath catches in my chest.

“Gavin, I don’t think—“

He rests a finger over my lips.

“I’m doing this in the name of academics. You need inspiration? You're looking at it. Now shut up and let me kiss you.”

Pretty Little Things by Teresa Mummert!!!!

Synopsis:

I was young enough not to understand that my life was different. Colin became the one person that I could count on to protect me. He suffered for the both of us by carrying the burden of our secret.

We were the lucky few that got a chance to start over. A fake family, a new home and a pretty little life built on lies. But while our lives continued to intertwine, we were put on very different paths. Now it was only a matter of time before they collide and the beast behind the beauty is exposed.

Excerpt:

“What are your plans for the day, little one?” I asked, and she startled.

“I have a report I need to finish on the adverse effects of corporal punishment used on children.” I laughed and shook my head, my eyes going back to the television. “Yeah, so that will be fun. But if Connor and Grace aren’t back, I can always skip school tomorrow.”

“Not a chance.”

“I wasn’t asking.”

I looked over at her, her eyebrow raised in challenge.

“You had a private tutor.”

“I had antisocial tendencies and a habit of challenging authority.” I laughed as the credits rolled on the screen in front of us.

“I don’t doubt that.”

We fell silent as we both sat, unmoving. “So this guy…” I let my voice trail off.

“He’s just a guy.” She shrugged as she pulled on a loose thread on the blanket.

“Is he a good guy?”

“Are you?” she shot back.

“That’s a loaded question.” I stood up, stretching, and when I looked down at her, her smile fell. “What?”

“Did that hurt?”

I sighed as I thought of the marks that covered my back. “Don’t.” I walked over to the shelves of movies, scanning the titles. I didn’t know if it bothered me more that she was asking about them or that she looked upset over my injuries. I was no one for her to feel sorry for. While I’d received them for not doing what I was told, I’d earned them by following through with the orders. But answering that question perplexed me. If you take a child and never show him affection, any attention received is positive in his eyes. Coupling that with the twisted abusive behavior and dominance that was instilled in me so young, I learned to derive gratification from receiving pain as well as giving. It was a release, a way to atone for my sins.

She stood and walked up to my side. My scars should have been a warning to not get close to someone like me, but Annabel saw my dominant side as a reflection of my overprotective nature toward her. My eyes closed as her hand ran softly over my back. Her feather light touch on my own wounds more painful than when I had received them.

“Annabel, stop,” I bit out, but she continued on, her fingers trailing over the raised welts. My body stiffened, not wanting someone to give me affection I didn’t deserve. It turned my stomach, and for once I was completely thrown off guard. So I did what I knew best, and I instilled fear in her.

“I said fucking stop,” I seethed as I grabbed her by her shoulders and slammed her small body against the movies, causing the shelves to shake. Her green eyes were wide with fright, and now I was the one desperate to touch. Her fear was palpable, and while I knew I was pushing away the one person who even remotely began to understand me, it was for her own good. She didn’t have to understand as long as she listened. But listening to me was something Annabel rarely did anymore. She’d become too comfortable in my presence, and now she ignored the alarms that would set a normal person on edge. That was what terrified me about her seeing this guy. I had no idea what kind of person he was, but I knew Annie wouldn’t be as cautious as she should be.

“Annabel…” I rested my forehead against the case, my body hovering over hers, caging her in with my arms on her shoulders. Her name came out like a plea for help.

“I-I’m sorry.”

I lifted my head and looked at her. The fear-induced stutter let me know I had succeeded in making her understand.

I took a step back from her, running my hand along my jaw before turning and leaving the room, desperate to put distance between us.

Praise for THE SHADOW SOUL

The writing is flawless. The story and plot line, and plot twists, had me captivated and enamored for the first words. I couldn’t put this book down for anything, and I absolutely cannot wait for book two. The world building is amazing. I feel like I can feel the spirits when Jin speaks of them. And I can feel the fire on my skin like Rhen. And the secondary characters are just as great as the main characters…It’s an amazing start to a new series that is going to have people of all ages wanting so much more. - Happy Tails and Tales

I loved the characters. Jinji is an amazing girl of such strength. Reading about her sometimes brought tears to my eyes because I couldn’t help but love her from the beginning. And Rhen, even though I was suspecting him of treachery he didn’t fail to be surprising at every turn… I can’t wait to find out what happens next!" – Creating Serenity
Praise for KAITLYN DAVIS

Kaitlyn Davis writes some of the best action scenes I have come across in a young adult book; they are fast paced and so well delivered. – Reflections of a Bookworm

I really enjoyed Ms Davis's writing, I was riveted throughout and was eager to see what would happen - there was drama, danger, action and romance that was wonderfully detailed and described. – Obsession with Books

Review:
3.5

This is wonderful addition to the YA fantasy world. It's a unique story about a girl seeking revenge on the deaths of the people of her tribe. Jinjii is the epitome of what it means to be a warrior. Her strength could be felt through the pages of the book and I felt myself engrossed in her world as she took on strange dangers.

Along the way Jinjii meets Rhen, a prince. He was loyal, and is after the exact same enemy that Jinjii is after. The two embark on an adventure to look for the very people who destroyed everything; the very ones that inflicted so much pain.

If your a fantasy lover, this is a book you will not want to miss out on. The battles and action sequence of the book was astounding!! I felt as if I were apart of the story myself. The images that are distiller into my mind only make me the much more impatient for the second book to get here.

The Shadow Soul has it all. An amazing heroine and hero, plot, the beautiful descriptions, and the many, many secrets that keep you guessing throughout the book. It's definitely an entertaining read.
