REVIEW

Honestly, it took me a d**n long time to get on board with Jason. In the first book, The Trouble with You, I thought of him as the ultimate a**hole villain—and not one I could like. He had a longggggg way to go to redeem himself for how he treated Hailey and in turn treated Felicity.

Obviously, he had so much to make up for. It’s a good thing we got his POV in this book because otherwise, I probably would have hated him even more than I already did. As I stated before, it took me too long to jump on board with him. He was too hot and cold for my liking. And Felicity just took it and forgave him way too easily. I wanted him to grovel.

Here we have this amazing as h**l football player that literally has the world at his feet. Would it hurt to make the boy suffer more just a tad bit longer than he did? Maybe I’m just too picky. Regardless, I wanted...more.

That being said, I enjoyed the crap out of the second book of the Rixon Raiders. Especially Asher. He’s what I’m most looking forward to reading about. Could anyone ask for a dreamier book boyfriend? Besides Cam, that is.

Overall, I liked this one quite a bit despite some of things I stated earlier. This is has it all—angst and drama galore! I’m ready for the next one!

EXCERPT

I did hate him.

I hated that he made me feel so alive, so desired.

I hated the way he knew exactly how to kiss me, touch me, to get me to fall at his feet.
But most of all I hated how I didn’t hate him, not even a little bit.

“Relax,” he said as if he knew I was all up in my head. “If it makes you feel any better, I hate you too.” His thumb brushed my neck slowly before he chased his touch with his lips. “I hate how I can’t stop thinking about you.” Kiss. “I hate that you say the most ridiculous things.” Kiss. “But most of all I hate that Thatcher and his goon had their hands on you. I hate...” His lips touched my skin again as my heart crashed against my ribcage.

This wasn’t the plan.

He wasn’t supposed to say all of this, to feed the small part of me dreaming of a different time and place. A time and place where Felicity Giles could ever end up with a guy like Jason Ford.

I waited for his words, greedy for more. But they never came, replaced with hot kisses as he dragged his tongue up and down the hollow of my throat. Disappointment flooded my chest but deep down, I wasn’t surprised. Jason would never admit the truth. That there was something between us. That this was more than just sex. And for as much as it hurt, maybe it was better this way.

His hands were all over me now, his mouth the same.

“Jason,” I said, gently tugging his hair. “Slow down.”

He lifted his face, brow arched. I took advantage of the moment, pushing my hands against his chest to move him back. Then I fumbled around to find the recline handle and pulled.

“What the fuck?” he grunted, and I stifled a giggle. Jason needed control. He needed to hold all the power. But this time, I wanted to be in the driving seat.

I wanted to drive him wild.

“What game are you playing, Giles?” he asked, his hands gripping my hips as I gently rocked above him. We both groaned, and another thrill shot through me. He was at my mercy now.

With my newfound confidence, I hooked my hands into the waistband of my leggings and pushed them down over my hips. It was no easy feat getting them off, but I managed. If Jason noticed my clumsy striptease, he didn’t comment, his hooded gaze too busy eating up every inch of my bare skin.
“Fuck, you’re beautiful,” he whispered.

Yeah, fuck. His words were like a poisoned arrow through my heart.
As if he noticed my hesitation, challenge glinted in his eye. He was ready to pounce, to take back the power and flip this whole thing on me. But I wasn’t backing down. I wasn’t just a pawn in his game.
I was the goddamn queen.

And this queen wanted her king to kneel at her feet.

Blog Tour Review-A Girl Named Anna by Lizzy Barber

Publisher: Mira
Published: September 3, 2019
Genre: Mystery
Source: E-ARC
Rating: 3 stars

Blurb:
A compulsive suspense debut for fans of Megan Miranda, Wendy Walker and Kimberly Belle, about two teens--one sheltered by her strict and reclusive mamma, one living in the shadow of the missing sister who was snatched from a theme park as a toddler--and their search for the truth about their families and each other.

If your whole life is a lie, who can you trust?

Raised in a quiet rural community, Anna has always been taught that her Mamma's rules are the only path to follow. But, on her eighteenth birthday, she defies her Mamma for the first time in her life, and goes to Astroland. She’s never been allowed to visit Florida’s biggest theme park, so why, when she arrives, does everything about it seem so familiar? And is there a connection to the mysterious letter she receives that same day—a letter addressing her by a different name?

Rosie has grown up in the shadow of the missing sister she barely remembers, her family fractured by years of searching without leads. Now, on the fifteenth anniversary of her sister’s disappearance, the media circus resumes as the funds dedicated to the search dry up, and Rosie vows to uncover the truth herself. But can she find the answer before it tears her family apart?

Winner of the Daily Mail First Novel Competition, A Girl Named Anna is a psychologically riveting read that introduces Lizzy Barber as an outstanding new voice in suspense fiction.

Review:

I’m not gonna lie—this took me quite awhile to get completely engrossed in. And even after I finished, I still felt a teensy bit underwhelmed. I still liked the book though and thought it was well written and kind of scary once we find out what happened.

I’d also like on record and say that I’ve been listening to a bunch of true crime podcasts—mysterious missing persons cases to be exact. Then I’d find myself on reddit reading crazy theories on what could have happened and what others thought of what happened to these missing people.

How is this relevant to this book? Well, this is a story about a young girl who goes missing and the family who faces the aftermath of the abduction. There’s one part of the story where the sister, Rosie, goes onto a site just like reddit to read theories. Kind of makes you wonder if some theories deem true.

While I thought the concept was interesting. It was the whole getting there that was slow going for me to truly enjoy it. But the characters were well written and at times engaging. Anna’s life is one full of secrets and structure. Her mamma is strict, almost exactly like the mom from Carrie. You know, the whole paranoia and crazy religious aspect of it.

Rosie is the younger sister that has never been able to live up to her older sister after her disappearance. That would be something very tough to deal with as a teenager.

Overall, I think if the blurb interested you at all, give it a shot. May just be a case of it’s not you, it’s me. I still liked it okay.

About the Author:
Hello!

I am a London-based author, living in Islington with my husband, George. I read English at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University, and My Name Is Anna is my first novel.

Having previously dabbled in acting and film development, I have spent the last eight years working in the restaurant business with my brother, Jamie, heading up our brand and marketing department. We have a small group of restaurants, mainly in London, including Hush in Mayfair, the all-day burger brand, Hache, and the Latin American barbecue group, Cabana.

Working with the restaurants has been creative and dynamic…and has involved a certain about of writing (including a lot of press releases!), but writing has always been a creative itch I have scratched on the side.

I have always written in fits and starts, but about five years ago I started writing my first serious novel – a very long and drawn out literary fiction piece based on my grandmother’s life in Mandate Palestine, pre-Suez Cairo and post-war London.

I started taking regular classes with Maggie Hamand at the Complete Creative Writing Course, which made me completely rethink my approach to writing, and was invaluable in shaping the way I wrote.

However, in April 2017 I found myself at a complete dead end with my first novel, and, almost as a form of release, starting dabbling with a thriller that had been niggling away at me. I mentioned I was writing it to my mother, and, about a week later, she told me that she had spied a first novel competition that I *had* to enter.

I hammered away at my laptop, completing just enough of the book to be able to enter, and literally handed my entry in on the closing day of the competition (I couriered my entry, so worried was I it wouldn’t make the deadline!).

And then I forgot all about it…

About two months later, preparing for my morning operations meeting, I received a phone call out of the blue, which completely changed my life.

The phone call was from Luigi Bonomi of LBA Books telling me I had WON the Daily Mail and Random House First Novel Prize 2017

Thus began an extraordinary chain of events that I am still waiting to wake up from on a daily basis. The little thriller I had dabbled away at is now My Name Is Anna, and was published by Century, an imprint of Penguin Random House, in January 2019. It will be published in North America by MIRA, an imprint of Harper Collins, on 3rd September 2019.

I have had the privilege of working with a marvelous team of people on My Name Is Anna / A Girl Named Anna, and am now hard (hard!) work on my second book. Stay tuned…

Blurb:
Eight years ago, I gave Grayson Price a piece of my heart.
To him, I was the strange girl whose mom had just abandoned her.
To me, he was a savior, an anchor, someone who stood beside me on that beach.
The next time I saw him, I was twenty, and he was thirty-six.
He didn't remember me.
And when he flirted...
I didn't tell him.
By the time he found out, it was too late.
We tried to deny our desire, but our attraction was too enticing.
Eight years ago, I gave Grayson Price a piece of my heart.
Too bad he’s my dad’s best friend.

Excerpt:
The bartender comes over a few seconds later and places a tumbler down in front of me. I lift the glass to my mouth, and as I’m about to swallow, I sense a presence beside me. I turn, take the swig, and look at who’s there.
A woman.
She’s beautiful.
Exquisite, really.
Young.
With long, sun-kissed locks that fall below her breasts, I lift my gaze to study her features. She’s too young for me, that’s for certain. She appears to be in her mid to early twenties with big blue eyes and freckled skin as though she’s just left the beach. Her hair flows in waves that look tousled by the wind.
If I thought she was lovely before, she smiles, and my pulse begins to race. How long has it been since I’ve gotten laid? Too long, if I have to ask.
I watch as she nibbles on her lower lip as if she’s waiting for me to say something. When I don’t, she pulls her shoulders back and then flashes me a smirk.
“Mind if I join you?” But she doesn’t wait for me to answer before she takes the seat beside me. In this position, I can see she’s wearing a dress, and from where she’s perched, it’s short.
“Not at all,” I say. “What would you like?”
“A glass of champagne, please,” she responds. Her voice is soft like an angel.
Fuck.
What is wrong with me?
I turn to the bartender again. “A glass of champagne for the lady.”
A second later, the flute is placed in front of her, and she tips it back, her full lips touching the glass, her tongue sweeping out to lick a drop that missed her mouth.
I wonder what her lips would feel like on mine.
“So what brings you to Malaga?” I ask, needing to know more about this woman. “Business or pleasure?”
A seductive smirk spreads across her face as if she’s up to no good, and the idea of bringing her back to my room later and sinking inside her becomes more and more promising.
“What?”
“Pleasure,” she finally draws out, and I know if I want her, I can have her. I take a swig of my drink and then sear her with my gaze.
“I’m supposed to be meeting a buddy for dinner, but it appears he’s not showing. Are you free tonight?”
Since Tyler isn’t here, I might as well make the best of my trip.
Her eyes widen, and she opens to her mouth to speak, hopefully, to say yes, but then I hear it.
“Grayson,” the voice calls out from behind me, and I turn to find Tyler approaching. I want to curse him for coming now. I know, at first, I hated that he was late, but now that he’s here, I want him to leave.
He turns to the lady on my right and smiles. “I see you found him,” he says to her, and I narrow my brows . . .
Found him?
He knows her.
“Yes, he was kind enough to buy me a drink.” She lifts the glass at him and winks.
“You’re not old enough to drink,” Tyler adds, and I swear it’s like I’m watching a ping-pong game, and I can’t figure out what’s going on.
“I am in Spain,” she chides.
And that makes me look from him to her.
What am I missing?
Tyler . . . Is he cheating on Kim?
“So, Grayson, does she look the same?”
“Does who look the same?”
“River, of course.” He points at the stunning beauty beside me.
She looks familiar. Why do her eyes look familiar, and why is Tyler looking down adoringly at this woman? And then it hits me in the gut.
This is no woman. She’s a girl. A very beautiful one but a girl, nonetheless.
Young.
Very. Fucking. Young.
How did I not see it before? A girl so young, she could be my daughter. She’s his daughter.

Review-The Lady Rogue by Jenn Bennett

Publisher: Simon Pulse
Published: September 3, 2019
Genre: YA Historical
Source: Finished copy
Rating: 5 stars

Blurb:
The Last Magician meets A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue in this thrilling tale filled with magic and set in the mysterious Carpathian Mountains where a girl must hunt down Vlad the Impaler’s cursed ring in order to save her father.

Some legends never die…

Traveling with her treasure-hunting father has always been a dream for Theodora. She’s read every book in his library, has an impressive knowledge of the world’s most sought-after relics, and has all the ambition in the world. What she doesn’t have is her father’s permission. That honor goes to her father’s nineteen-year-old protégé—and once-upon-a-time love of Theodora’s life—Huck Gallagher, while Theodora is left to sit alone in her hotel in Istanbul.

Until Huck arrives from an expedition without her father and enlists Theodora’s help in rescuing him. Armed with her father’s travel journal, the reluctant duo learns that her father had been digging up information on a legendary and magical ring that once belonged to Vlad the Impaler—more widely known as Dracula—and that it just might be the key to finding him.

Journeying into Romania, Theodora and Huck embark on a captivating adventure through Gothic villages and dark castles in the misty Carpathian Mountains to recover the notorious ring. But they aren’t the only ones who are searching for it. A secretive and dangerous occult society with a powerful link to Vlad the Impaler himself is hunting for it, too. And they will go to any lengths—including murder—to possess it.

Review:
There’s nothing out there like a Jenn Bennett book. She writes stories that not only have the cutest plot lines, but also ones that make you fall in love. And I fell in love with this story like you wouldn't believe. Theodora is such a great character that I instantly rooted for. Huck...yes. He's very dreamy and the banter between him and Theodora was what kept me turning the pages.

Huck and Theo have what one would like to call, history. Huck broke our girl's heart when he left her without a goodbye and never looked back. That is, until now-when he shows up at her hotel in Istanbul. Before she knows it, they're on the run and in search of a magical ring from Vlad the impaler.

We are then taken on a magical adventure filled with action, romance, and a roller-coaster of a ride that you don't want to get out of. I fell in love from the very first page and didn't stop until I finished the story. It was so romantic and I loved being able to leave the real world and go into this fantasy land that was entirely too much fun. Oh how I wish this wasn't a standalone!

Review—Bringing Down the Duke (A League of Extraordinary Women #1) by Evie Dunmore

Publisher: Berkley
Published: September 3, 2019
Genre: Historical Fiction
Source: Print ARC
Rating: 4 stars

Blurb:
A stunning debut for author Evie Dunmore and her Oxford Rebels, in which a fiercely independent vicar's daughter takes on a duke in a fiery love story that threatens to upend the British social order.

England, 1879. Annabelle Archer, the brilliant but destitute daughter of a country vicar, has earned herself a place among the first cohort of female students at the renowned University of Oxford. In return for her scholarship, she must support the rising women's suffrage movement. Her charge: recruit men of influence to champion their cause. Her target: Sebastian Devereux, the cold and calculating Duke of Montgomery who steers Britain's politics at the Queen's command. Her challenge: not to give in to the powerful attraction she can't deny for the man who opposes everything she stands for.

Sebastian is appalled to find a suffragist squad has infiltrated his ducal home, but the real threat is his impossible feelings for green-eyed beauty Annabelle. He is looking for a wife of equal standing to secure the legacy he has worked so hard to rebuild, not an outspoken commoner who could never be his duchess. But he wouldn't be the greatest strategist of the Kingdom if he couldn't claim this alluring bluestocking without the promise of a ring...or could he?

Locked in a battle with rising passion and a will matching her own, Annabelle will learn just what it takes to topple a duke....

Review:
Say No to the Duke is a fun read! Betsy and Jeremy were a hoot to deal with. The delicious banter, the sexy kisses, and the way that they tried very hard not to fall for each other was what made me love them so much.

Betsy is a strong and independent lady—she also hides who she truly is because of stupid society rules. All the while, men are falling at their feet just to have a chance at marriage with her. Betsy’s having none of it though. The only one who seems to truly see her is Jeremy Roden.

Jeremy suffers PTSD from being in the war. The only time he feels light and free is when he’s around Lady Betsy. He wants her. Badly. Who can blame the guy? Betsy is awesome in all the ways that count.

Those looking for witty banter and a somewhat love/hate relationship; I can’t recommend this enough!

Review-Well Met by Jen DeLuca

Publisher: Berkley
Published: September 3, 2019
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Source: Print ARC
Rating:

Blurb:
All's faire in love and war for two sworn enemies who indulge in a harmless flirtation in a laugh-out-loud rom-com from debut author Jen DeLuca.

Emily knew there would be strings attached when she relocated to the small town of Willow Creek, Maryland, for the summer to help her sister recover from an accident, but who could anticipate getting roped into volunteering for the local Renaissance Faire alongside her teenaged niece? Or that the irritating and inscrutable schoolteacher in charge of the volunteers would be so annoying that she finds it impossible to stop thinking about him?

The faire is Simon's family legacy and from the start he makes clear he doesn't have time for Emily's lighthearted approach to life, her oddball Shakespeare conspiracy theories, or her endless suggestions for new acts to shake things up. Yet on the faire grounds he becomes a different person, flirting freely with Emily when she's in her revealing wench's costume. But is this attraction real, or just part of the characters they're portraying?

This summer was only ever supposed to be a pit stop on the way to somewhere else for Emily, but soon she can't seem to shake the fantasy of establishing something more with Simon or a permanent home of her own in Willow Creek.

Review
"I didn't choose the wench life. The wench life chose me."

There’s a reason I read and love romance. Because of books like Well Met that make me fall in love. Do you know the feeling you get when you go to a rom-com at the movies? The one that makes you feel like butterflies the size of dinosaurs live in your tummy? That is what I felt reading this highly entertaining and romantic read.

Emily goes to move in with her sister and niece after they’ve been in a car accident. Upon helping her sister out, Emily takes her niece, Caitlin, so she could go sign up for the local Renaissance Faire that happens every summer. What she didn’t realize was that she would also be roped into being part of the festivities. That’s where she meets a gaggle of interesting people—including the man who hates her for no reason at all, Simon.

“You’re so focused on the past it’s all you can see. How can we have a future if all you keep doing is looking back?”

The beginning started off slow for me—so much so that I put down the book a lot. Simon’s hot and cold nature really bugged me too. I didn’t understand why he was such a dickhead to Emily to begin with. She’s very down to earth and fun—how could you not like her. Then we get the reason of why he is the way he is. And even then, it still wasn’t a good enough reason for me.

The witty remarks and quick banter between the two when they were in character as a pirate and a tavern wench, respectively, was sexy. When it did happen, I couldn’t help but keep the grin off my face. Simon as a hot pirate? Yes, sign me up, please!

Want to be wooed? Look no further. This is so damn cute and you won’t regret it.
