Kate McBrien

“Okay, once more from the top.” John counted off before playing the introduction to a new song.
Justin counted the beats in his head and looked up from his guitar. They were rehearsing in the legendary Abbey Road Studios. It was a spacious studio with honey-colored hardwood floors set in a herringbone pattern, with
upholstered walls covered in reds and golds.
After a few bars of the acoustic guitar and piano, Justin sang a song he wrote for Lucy. Inspired by a dream he had
after leaving California, it was the most romantic song he had ever written.
He lost himself in the music while playing his guitar and singing. He and Lucy watched a sunset turn into a deep indigo night sky as he shared his feelings for her. He had this dream the day after he left California and it had shaken him to his core. Butunlike his earlier dreams of violence and the need to protect her from harm, this dream was more realistic than any of the others.
Justin closed his eyes, focusing on the lyrics about holding Lucy in his arms. His dreams had always been highly realistic, but this recent dream was more like a memory. It stimulated all his senses. He could not only feel Lucy in his arms, he heard the sound of male voices singing in the background and the sounds of a city below, as if they were on top of a building somewhere. The air was warm and full of exotic scents that he couldn’tidentify. He shuddered as this familiarity washed over him. It was impossible. He had never shared a night like that with Lucy. As the song ended, he was exhausted and miserable.
“That was marvelous,” Graham said from the recording booth. “Let’s wrap it up for tonight. I’m feeling generous, so let me take everyone to the pub.” It was no surprise Graham was in a great mood tonight. He didn’t like the scandal that surrounded Justin, but he was delighted with the publicity that created renewed interest in Indigo. Tickets for the three concerts had sold out, and Indigo’s back catalog was selling well.
“Excellent.” John stood up from the piano and closed the fallboard over the keys. “I’m completely knackered. I could use a pint or two.”
Justin remained on his stool, pulling the guitar strap from around his shoulder.
“Are you all right?” John asked, gathering up his sheet music and placing it in a carrier bag.
“Yeah,” Justin muttered, rubbing his eyes.
Indigo’s other band members, Colin, Mike, and Liam, were gathered in the recording booth listening to the playback. Justin could just make out the song’s melody as it came through the slightly open door.
John frowned. “You looked like you’ve seen a ghost.”

The Fall Before Flight by L.M Halloran!!

Blurb

I didn’t try to kill myself. It was an accident.
No, more than that — a natural disaster.
Fate’s fickle lightning strike.

No one believes me.

I can't blame them, really.
There’s something wrong with me.
I'm incapable of emotions that come naturally
to others. Fear, compassion, love...

I might be a sociopath.

Everyone thinks I’m beyond help.
Everyone but Dr. Leo Chastain.
One of us is going to break the other...

Care to place a bet?

My Review:

It's not my first rodeo and if there's one thing I can expect from an L.M Halloran book, it's complex characters and a riveting story. And boy, does she deliver!

This book touches on the intricacies of the human brain where Amelia is concerned, and I truly enjoyed the slow unravel of it all. She's the type of person who considers herself to be “broken" as she doesn't act (or react) the way others do, and every chapter peeled back another one of her layers. Her story broke my heart and her journey toward finding herself helped stitch it back together.

Leo was a pleasant surprise and I enjoyed watching his interactions with Amelia. Every time I thought I had him figured out I was proven wrong. Their chemistry was undeniable and their coming together was hotter than hell. I appreciated that it was a slow burn type of romance because it made their situation even more real.

There’s so much I want to say about this book, but I don’t want to give anything away. Let’s just say The Fall Before Flight is the kind of story I covet the most. The characters are flawed, the situations are real, the chemistry is off the charts, and the drama is most definitely there.

If you’re looking for a book that you can devour in one sitting, then I highly recommend picking up a copy today.

A Baltimore detective and a medical examiner must work together when the witnesses of a long-ago crime become the victims of a deranged killer in this gripping romantic suspense novel.

Baltimore city Homicide Detective JD Fitzpatrick has seen a lot of horrific violence, both as a cop and during his deployment in Afghanistan, but nothing like the trail of tortured bodies that are turning up throughout the city. He’s up against a brutal killer with a very personal vendetta. And now JD is beginning to suspect that his medical examiner may be shielding some crucial evidence linked to the case.

Medical Examiner Dr. Lucy Trask is intrigued by JD’s compassion, but she isn’t about to mix work with pleasure. Not while there’s a ruthless killer on the loose. And definitely not while she’s keeping a dark secret that could connect her to these vicious killings—and put her next on the killer’s hit list...

Review-
You Belong to Me has all the classic love I have for anything romantic suspense. I’m actually kicking myself in the foot for waiting so long to read this author. Her books are both engaging and lovely. The characters are ones that I cared a lot about.

Lucy and J.D. are HOT! There’s instant attraction but the two remain professional when they meet—Lucy is a medical examiner and J.D. is a homicide detective. A match made in heaven really.

The opening scene was truly what set everything off. It made me want to know more and in turn I flew through the book. It’s long, so be prepared.the suspense and mystery was what I wanted to get to the bottom of and it didn’t disappoint. For those looking for an interesting yet totally worth it romantic suspense novel, this is it. I can’t recommend enough!

ABOUT FIGHT OR FLIGHT

A series of chance encounters leads to a sizzling new romance from the New York Times bestselling author of the On Dublin Street series.

The universe is conspiring against Ava Breevort. As if flying back to Phoenix to bury a childhood friend wasn’t hell enough, a cloud of volcanic ash traveling from overseas delayed her flight back home to Boston. Her last ditch attempt to salvage the trip was thwarted by an arrogant Scotsman, Caleb Scott, who steals a first class seat out from under her. Then over the course of their journey home, their antagonism somehow lands them in bed for the steamiest layover Ava’s ever had. And that’s all it was–until Caleb shows up on her doorstep.

When pure chance pulls Ava back into Caleb’s orbit, he proposes they enjoy their physical connection while he’s stranded in Boston. Ava agrees, knowing her heart’s in no danger since a) she barely likes Caleb and b) his existence in her life is temporary. Not long thereafter Ava realizes she’s made a terrible error because as it turns out Caleb Scott isn’t quite so unlikeable after all. When his stay in Boston becomes permanent, Ava must decide whether to fight her feelings for him or give into them. But even if she does decide to risk her heart on Caleb, there is no guarantee her stubborn Scot will want to risk his heart on her….
Review:
I’ve been looking for a book like this for such a long time... Okay, just kidding, I’m a bookworm! It’s only been a few days (since I finished my last great read) and I needed a story that would completely consume me. I decided that Samantha Young would be next—most of her books always make me feel good. It has swoony romance, hot as hell heroes, and heroines that are completely relatable.

Ava is seriously my favorite part of the whole book. She’s smart and independent but also had a vulnerability that made her seem more human. She’s one of those characters that I automatically feel a sense of loyalty to. Such as hating any and every character whose ever done her wrong—even to those in the future who will no doubt do something to hurt her. Yes, I like her that much! She gave as good as she got and I can totally appreciate a girl who can hold her own.

Caleb. Wow. This man came in at a close second to my favorite character. He’s a huge dickhead when we first meet him but it’s nice to see that he can’t resist the wonderful Ava—no matter how hard he tries. And he’s Scottish! Hot the nth degree.

If you’re looking for a fun enemies-to-lovers/fuck buddies romance, this is so for you! I mean, it’s hella entertaining from start to finish. Did I mention the hero is like a certain character from Outlander? And that he’s 100% alpha hotness? Well, he is! If that doesn’t make you want to read it even more, I don’t know what will.

Review—The Spellbook Of Katrina Van Tassel (A Story of Sleepy Hollow) by Alyssa Palombo

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Published: October 2, 2018
Genre: Mystery, Fiction
Source: Print ARC
Rating: 4.5 Stars

About The Book

When Ichabod Crane arrives in the spooky little village of Sleepy Hollow as the new schoolmaster, Katrina Van Tassel is instantly drawn to him. Through their shared love of books and music, they form a friendship that quickly develops into romance. Ichabod knows that as an itinerant schoolteacher of little social standing, he has nothing to offer the wealthy Katrina – unlike her childhood friend-turned-enemy, Brom Van Brunt, who is the suitor Katrina’s father favors.

But when romance gives way to passion, Ichabod and Katrina embark on a secret love affair, sneaking away into the woods after dark to be together – all while praying they do not catch sight of Sleepy Hollow’s legendary Headless Horseman. That is, until All Hallows’s Eve, when Ichabod suddenly disappears, leaving Katrina alone and in a perilous position.

Enlisting the help of her friend – and rumored witch – Charlotte Jansen, Katrina seeks the truth of Ichabod Crane’s disappearance, investigating the forest around Sleepy Hollow using unconventional – often magical – means. What they find forces Katrina to question everything she once knew, and to wonder if the Headless Horseman is perhaps more than just a story after all. In Alyssa Palombo's
The Spellbook of Katrina Van Tassel nothing is as it seems, and love is a thing even death won't erase.

Review-
I truly enjoyed Palombo’s take on a classic tale—Sleepy Hollow. We’ve all grown knowing the story and the infamous Headless Horseman. What’s makes this book so interesting is hearing the story told from Katrina Van Tassel. The object of Ichabod Crane and Brom Van Brunt’s affections. What we get is a forbidden love affair between Ichabod and Katrina—and ultimately the disappearance of Mr. Crane. What’s Katrina to do when the love of her life is missing?

I thought the book started or a bit slow but quickly picked up. I was anxious to get to the part where Crane disappeared, partly because I like a good mystery. Knowing this is a retelling you can kind of get the feel of who it is from the very beginning but it’s still able to bring a fresh take on the original story. Katrina and Ichabod are true love and everything it involves. The only problem is that he’s a lowly teacher and won’t ever be able to provide Van Tassel with anything of worth. That’s all according to society and her own father—who shares with us that Katrina is the wealthiest heiress around.

Which means that Brom makes the better suitor. Brom sucks though. He’s a terrible character and so many times I wished I could punch him in his smug mouth. Katrina is a feminist through and through. She was strong,
independent, and knew exactly what she wanted. I liked how feisty she was. It was amazing watching her put the
men in her life in place. Overall, I thought the book had the perfect amount of romance, eeriness, and the creepiness that made Sleepy Hollow such an amazing read to begin with.

Blog Tour Review—Hot Winter Nights by Jill Shavis

ABOUT JILL SHALVIS

ABOUT HOT WINTER NIGHTS (a standalone Heartbreaker Bay novel)
Who needs mistletoe?

Most people wouldn’t think of a bad Santa case as the perfect Christmas gift. Then again, Molly Malone, office manager at Hunt Investigations, isn’t most people, and she could really use a distraction from the fantasies she’s been having since spending the night with her very secret crush, Lucas Knight. Nothing happened, not that Lucas knows that—but Molly just wants to enjoy being a little naughty for once . . .

Whiskey and pain meds for almost-healed bullet wounds don’t mix. Lucas needs to remember that next time he’s shot on the job, which may be sooner rather than later if Molly’s brother, Joe, finds out about them. Lucas can’t believe he’s drawing a blank on his (supposedly) passionate tryst with Molly, who’s the hottest, smartest, strongest woman he’s ever known. Strong enough to kick his butt if she discovers he’s been assigned to babysit her on her first case. And hot enough to melt his cold heart this Christmas.

Review:
Jill Shavis is an author that I know can deliver romantic gestures and a HEA. Molly and Lucas are the type of characters you want to read about; mainly because the heroine is so sassy and doesn’t take crap from anyone. Despite the fact that something terrible happened to her when she was a teenager; she doesn’t let it hinder her plans to do what she wants most. Investigate.

But her overprotective boss, brother, and Lucas himself, will try everything in their power to keep her safe. Even if that means “babysitting” her while she does it. While the story is good and swoony, I still felt a bit of a disconnect with Lucas and Molly. For one, I didn’t feel any kind of chemistry between the two. That’s a must for me when reading a romance story. I liked them but didn’t care for them being together.

Overall, this was a book that was still interesting and fun. I look forward to reading the next book.
