Better Off Friends by Elizabeth Eulberg

Synopsis:
For Macallan and Levi, it was friends at first sight. Everyone says guys and girls can’t be just friends, but these two are. They hang out after school, share tons of inside jokes, their families are super close, and Levi even starts dating one of Macallan’s friends. They are platonic and happy that way.

Eventually they realize they’re best friends — which wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t keep getting in each other’s way. Guys won’t ask Macallan out because they think she’s with Levi, and Levi spends too much time joking around with Macallan, and maybe not enough time with his date. They can’t help but wonder . . . are they more than friends or are they better off without making it even more complicated?

From romantic comedy superstar Elizabeth Eulberg comes a fresh, fun examination of a question for the ages: Can guys and girls ever really be just friends? Or are they always one fight away from not speaking again — and one kiss away from true love?

Review:
Blimey that was brilliant!

Better off Friends is a heartfelt, romantic novel about two best friends who are completely blind to each other. I have read one other book from Elizabeth called The Lonely Hearts Club, and I think right then and there I fell in love with her writing. Her voice has humor, the stories feel real, and best of all, she makes you fall in love.

I fell into such a bliss while reading Better off Friends. The story follows Macallan and Levi. Two best friends. One boy, one girl. Both in love with each other but too oblivious too see what everyone else around them sees.

"We were just friends. That's how she saw me. And maybe we were better off being only friends."

The friendship that went into Levi and Macallan was so pure and beautiful. They had a connection from the moment they met each other in seventh grade after Levi moves all the way from California. Macallan is the one who gets stuck with showing him around school and she makes it very clear in the beginning that she wants nothing else to do with him. But at lunch they both realize they love a tv show from the UK and that's the start to their road as friends.

The story is told from both Levi and Macallan's POV in a span of five years. We see their struggles with themselves as well as with each other. As a reader all you wanted to do was shake them to pieces for being so blind as to see what was right in front of them the entire time!

But alas, I loved the angst.I loved the humor and quick wit from the characters. I loved the easy going yet hard at times relationship between Levi and Macallan. They are both one in the same and completely belong together.

Books like this make me insanely happy. Make sure you grab a copy on release day-Feb 25, 2014!!

Thank you to Scholastic via NetGalley for providing me with a review copy for an honest review.

Blog Tour feat Excerpt, Review and Giveaway:
Behind the Pitch by Eden Butler!!!

Title: Behind the Pitch (Declan's POV)
Series: Seeking Serenity series, Book #1.5
Author: Eden Butler
Genre: NA Contemporary Romance
Release Date: January 24, 2014
Tour Organized By: As The Pages Turn
Add this book to your list: Goodreads

Synopsis:

Expat Irish rugby player Declan Fraser only wanted to play the sport he loves. He didn’t want to be stuck in this middle-of-nowhere town at this all too quaint university. He didn’t want his team captain to be an entitled jackass who switched Declan's position on the squad just to make himself look good. And he sure as hell didn’t want to fall in love with graduate student Autumn McShane.

Autumn is stubborn, but gorgeous; she bristles at any hint of dependency on anyone or anything, but she’s also a survivor. She’s everything Declan didn’t know he wanted. When Autumn finds herself in the middle of a challenging bet with her ex-boyfriend - who just happens to be the arrogant team captain that Declan hates - he feels honor bound to help her out. But he didn’t expect to fall for her in the process.

“Behind the Pitch” reveals the most twisted and erotic thoughts in Declan’s head as he navigates through his on again/off again, frustrating and deeply erotic relationship with Autumn McShane.

And lordy, does he have a filthy mind.

Excerpt:

“I…it’s too much.”

Autumn didn’t like losing control. She didn’t like being weak. I understood that, but that moment wasn’t a time to close herself up. I knew she wanted to let go. I knew there was no way I could stop touching her, bringing her closer and closer to the brink. So I gripped her tight, went deeper into her, smoothed my hands down her arse, squeezed, dipped my finger between her cheeks. “Look at me, love.” When my finger went lower, dipped further, her eyes flew open and a slow, lazy smile made the dimples in her face deepen. “There, that’s it.”

“How are you doing that?”

I didn’t answer, not at first, too caught up in the low moans working out of her throat. “Like that, McShane?”

“Ye…yes. Oh God—”

Her body loved how we moved together, how I touched her and when she came, clamped down harder, firmer, I wanted to climb inside her, stay locked with her in that moment, just the hot air of the room and weak whines of her voice keeping us grounded to the earth. I needed her, I knew that, like I never needed anything in my life. “I want you to say my name… like you mean it,” I said, steadying her face between my fingers. “I want you staring in my eyes, looking at me while I fill you up with nothing but my name coming off your lips.” Another pound into her, then two, each harder than the last and then I lowered my voice, latched my teeth onto her earlobe. “Do you mean it, McShane?”

“I…I do,” she said, her voice cracking when I pushed deeper.

“Then say it. Say it for me, love.”

“Declan.” She said my name like a promise and anything I felt before, any hope I ever had of never looking back, fell away completely.

Yep. Definitely in love with her.

The scent and taste of her, the feel of her around me, gripping me, touching me, was my undoing and I knew I’d explode soon. My eyelids lowered, then Autumn tightened her hold on me just a bit further when she touched my face. “I need to see you too.”

Completely, ruddy done for.

My Review:

Before I begin my review, I feel it’s important to notate that this is most definitely a companion novella and is not meant to be read as a stand-alone. If you try to read this without having read the first book, Chasing Serenity, it will throw you off entirely and won’t make much sense.

Eden decided to take us into the mind of Declan for Behind the Pitch, and I for one am grateful! Most books and novellas that are released in a different POV tend to be the same exact story retold, just from the thoughts of a different character. That wasn't the case with this one, and I am SO DAMN THRILLED.

Now I’m going to be honest, I’m not usually a fan of novellas. Most of the time I feel like too much information is left out. Like the story isn't complete … that I’m missing a lot. However, that wasn't the case here.

This novella takes us through Declan's retelling of a few of our favorite Chasing Serenity scenes. A majority of the story, however, takes place in present time where Joe has dropped a second bombshell on Declan, forcing yet another wedge to come between him and Autumn. Follow along as Declan’s hurt and anger cause his world to come crashing down, leaving him scrambling to clean up the pieces afterward. Will he be able to set things right, or has he finally gone too far?

I absolutely loved Behind the Pitch, probably a bit more than I did the first novel. It was fun being inside of Declan’s head, and seeing his struggles, his feelings ... it just made me fall for him even more.

Declan is a complex character who tends to let his emotions control him. He’s not the type to stick around and talk things out, and that just made me want to smack him at times! But no matter how much he infuriated me with the choices that he made, I was always in his corner rooting for him to make things right. I love Declan, and just wanted to see him happy.

Behind the Pitch was a 5 star read for me. I thought Eden’s decision to start off with something new and then revisit scenes in Declan's POV, all while jumping back to the present in between, was a smart choice. It was fresh, it was new, and it was definitely worth my time. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

Synopsis:

Graduate student Autumn McShane has had her share of heartbreak. She's been abandoned and betrayed and she lost her beloved mother in a tragic car accident five months ago. That loss damaged her body and fractured her spirit but she's learning to recover, until her ex-boyfriend returns to town, intent on making her life miserable.

Declan Fraser hates her ex as much as Autumn does, but the last thing she needs is to put her trust in the hands of another man, especially one like Declan: his hard body and lulling Irish accent makes more than a few girls weak-kneed. The talented rugby player is rude and sarcastic, with tattooed, muscular arms and a cocky attitude, but he's the only one who can help Autumn win an ill-advised bet that, if lost, could cost her more than she's willing to pay. The reluctant alliance between Declan and Autumn stirs up cravings she doesn't want to admit, but Declan is a hard man to resist.

Just when Autumn starts letting down her carefully constructed walls to the sexy bad boy, he betrays her when she needs him most. Autumn suspects Declan has secrets, and she is determined to uncover what drove him away from her, even if that means fraternizing with the enemy. But will the truth return Declan to her arms or add to the scars on her heart?

Review: Such Sweet Sorrow by Jenny Trout

Synopsis:
Never was there a tale of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo…But true love never dies. Though they’re parted by the veil between the world of mortals and the land of the dead, Romeo believes he can restore Juliet to life, but he’ll have to travel to the underworld with a thoroughly infuriating guide.

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, may not have inherited his father’s crown, but the murdered king left his son a much more important responsibility—a portal to the Afterjord, where the souls of the dead reside. When the determined Romeo asks for help traversing the treacherous Afterjord, Hamlet sees an opportunity for adventure, and the chance to avenge his father’s death.

In an underworld filled with leviathan monsters, ghoulish shades, fire giants and fierce Valkyrie warriors, Hamlet and Romeo must battle their way through jealousy, despair, and their darkest fears to rescue the fair damsel. Yet finding Juliet is only the beginning, and the Afterjord doesn’t surrender souls without a price…

Review:
I have never been much of a Romeo and Juliet fan. I hated beyond hated that they committed suicide over love. It made me angry and mad that someone could do that. It wasn't until I got a little bit older that I was able to understand and acknowledge why they did what they did. I didn't agree but I also didn't hate that they both died over one another. I saw the tragedy and the heartache. I feel that same love Romeo felt for Juliet, only it's a motherly love.

Hamlet, I never got into that story unfortunately. Such a shame because I enjoyed his character in the book.

What would have happened if Romeo never died? Or Hamlet crazy?
Such Sweet Sorrow goes into depth in her own words in this wonderful retelling of beloved stories written by Shakespeare. I love retellings and this one caught my interest because it was a retelling of both Hamlet and R+J. Very creative.

The world building was fantastic. There was a lot of stuff in there about Norse gods, mythology, etc. It's all very intriguing information.

As I stated above Hamlet I really enjoyed. His personality was a bit arrogant but I liked him more than Romeo who was much more broody. I usually like the broody ones but in this case I wanted the arrogant one.

Even though I enjoyed the story, I felt like as a whole there was something missing. Passion maybe? I didn't really feel too many emotions while reading, isn't that why we read in the first place? To feel? There were parts that dragged out and got too boring for my taste.

All in all if you like retellings and R+J and/or Hamlet, this book you may find quite enjoyable.

About the Author:

I've often been accused of having done more in my life than the average person my age, but if I were completely honest I'd have to tell you my secret: I'm really 392.

So after all this time, I'm a pretty crappy writer.

I have one book published but out of print, one coming out soon, and a bunch half written (when you have eternity, where's the reason to rush?). I've been favorably reviewed by horror greats like Nancy Kilpatrick, and my how-to-write-horror articles have been quoted in scholarly (aka community college freshmen's) papers.

I enjoy the occasional Bloody Mary, although a Bloody Kathy or Susan will suffice.

Mostly, I just try to keep a low profile so people don't figure out who I REALLY am.

Promo Tour: More Than Him by Jay McClean

Book title: More Than Him
Author: Jay McLean
Series: More #3
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Release date: January 28, 2014
Hosted by: Forever Me Romance

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us." - Marianne Williamson

We live in a world of darkness and shadows,
where monsters hide and aim to ruin.
And they did.
They ruined us and turned our dreams into nightmares.
But now we're back.
And we're fighting.
Not just for us, or for each other, but for our light.

More Than Him was emotional, heartbreaking, it gave you hope, and it had you rooting for the two people you know belong together. Logan and Amanda. Amanda and Logan. Two lost and lonely souls that have been tortured long enough, don’t you think?

Logan has left Amanda to go and travel the world. It’s been a long time since he last saw her and Logan is ready to come back. Back to the girl he loves to try and make things right. But will things ever been the same? Will Logan be able to make it up to Amanda?

Amanda is a strong character despite being so torn and heartbroken over Logan. I admire her completely; she’s the type of girl that deserves the very best. I could see why Logan did what he did and no one can argue that he does love Amanda.

The surrounding cast of characters were of course so great to see again. It's like a huge family reunion. I love going back to this world. It's so fun and it's filled with the perfect amount of humor and bittersweet pain.

I love the way Jay has the ability to make you feel every emotion as the characters she writes. I have fallen even more in love with Logan. He is such a great all around guy to love. He definitely knows how to make a girl feel sexy.

“I would’ve given you the entire universe because that’s what you deserve. And I want you to know that I wasn’t lying. Those last words I said to you, they are yours. And so am I. Forever. Because I do love you, Amanda. And that’s the truth.”

I look forward to reading more from Jay. Her books are phenomenal!! And I thinkLucy and Cam are next...woohoo! They are my fave<3
