I’ve been in a need of a new dystopian novel. Pawn is a story about Kitty, a seventeen year old orphan girl, whose turn it is to test to determine her place in society. When she gets a III, she feels as if her life is over. Kitty has dyslexia and was unable to finish the test due to not being able to read. So instead of leaving the only life she’s ever known and her boyfriend Benjy, Kitty decides to go and be a prostitute. At least doing that, she won’t have to move to Denver and risk not ever seeing the love of her life. It’s at the club she’s at that her life changes and nothing will ever be the same. She’s offered the chance of a lifetime. But it comes at a price.
“Tell you what Kitty. How would you like to be a VII?”
My mind has been blown to bits and pieces. Pawn is original and new and oh so dark and creepy! Kitty has a ton of spunk as our heroine, and in the world that she lives in, spunk is just what you need. Becoming Lila Hart is her blessing in disguise.
The whole mask aspect was intriguing and down right disturbing. Having your whole identity changed through extensive surgery is scary to think about. Kitty then meets Lila’s mom Celia, and Knox, Lila’s fiancée. It’s through them that she has to learn how to talk, walk, and act just like Lila. Can she trust them? Or are they just trying to use her for their own gain?
“Maybe I was nothing more than a pawn to her, a nameless piece in whatever twisted game she was playing, but she had to acknowledge me eventually.”
The romance was perfect but not too in your face. Even better, there isn’t a love triangle. The story is more focused on the politics of the country and finding a way to keep control of the population.
Pawn is full of backstabbing, lies, and plot twists galore! There was never a dull moment while reading. If you are looking for a fresh novel full of action and a kick ass heroine, this is the book for you.
