Book Review + Giveaway: FAT GIRL WALKING: SEX, FOOD, LOVE, AND BEING COMFORTABLE IN YOUR SKIN...EVERY INCH OF IT by Brittany Gibbons

FAT GIRL WALKING: Sex, Food, Love and Being Comfortable in Your Skin…Every Inch of It
by Brittany Gibbons
(May 19, 2015; Hardcover; $24.99; ISBN: 9780062343031; E-Book ISBN: 9780062343055).

In FAT GIRL WALKING, Brittany—acclaimed blogger and body image advocate—shares the often funny and often painful true stories of her life as an overweight girl growing up in the Midwest. From coping with mental illness and obesity in her family, to her struggles with dating (it’s hard—no matter your size!), dealing with anxiety issues that forced her to drop out of college, falling in love, getting married, having three children, battling with bulimia, launching a successful writing career, and to finally getting the confidence to say goodbye to diets and body hating for good, Brittany’s new memoir is a soul-baring account of her quest to learn to love her shape.

Brittany admits that for all of the hobbies she has picked up and put down over the years, body hating has been her most dedicated and consistent. But when her young daughter started holding her stomach in the mirror and imitating her mom, she realized something needed to change. Brittany had no idea what to do first, only that she knew she had been ignoring all of the amazing things she had achieved in her life despite her size.

She began to change her perspective by making a pledge to tell herself three things she liked about her body every day, no matter how awkward it seemed. She bought clothes to actually fit her body shape—not the size on the label—and actively stopped glorifying women (in her head and in her writing) as “beautiful” only if they were also thin. That adjective became the last thing Brittany decided she would say to her daughter after brilliant, hilarious, curious, creative, and daring. Brittany also started to recognize that her “flabby parts aren’t problem areas; they’re parts of a scrapbook” a scrapbook that contains memories of places she’s been, meals she enjoyed with loved ones, and the amazing children she has had.

Soon, she took her new powerful outlook to Times Square and stripped down to her bathing suit for a national women’s body image campaign and then did it again during a TEDx Talk in 2011 on a journey to start changing the societal conversation about body image. “I saw this as a chance to become a point of reference and authority for plus-size women online…Plus-size people were often portrayed in society as villains. We affected your health-care costs with our diabetes and our heart attacks. We all wanted gastric bypass and lap-band surgery as an easy way out. We were eating all the fast food from the dollar menu. We were lazy, lacked self-control, and were unpleasant to look at. We were an epidemic.”

Today on her successful blog, www.brittanyherself.com, fat shaming is all too real amongst the anonymity of the internet. Instead of being beaten down by it, she’s come to realize that people are allowed to say whatever they want about her weight but it’s entirely up to her how much power she lets those words have. In FAT GIRL WALKING, Brittany wants readers to learn that despite our background, upbringing and thoughts we have about ourselves, we are ultimately in charge of providing the narrative for how other people perceive us. “People treat me like a sexy and confident woman because I act like a sexy and confident woman; my behavior doesn’t give them any other options.”

FAT GIRL WALKING is not a diet book. It’s not one of those memoirs about how someone battled, and won, the fight against fat. Instead, it is a book that reminds us all that being chubby doesn’t mean you’ll end up alone, unhappy, or the subject of a cable medical show. Learning to love your shape is the important step of learning to live a life of the same joy, heartbreak, oddity, awkwardness and wonder as anyone else. Just with better snacks.

REVIEW:
In this day and age, it is so damn hard to love yourself. We get told everyday in movies, magazines, and life in general on how to look. Being a girl who has struggled with self esteem issues and depression...well let's just say the media never helped my thinking. Obviously if I wasn't a size zero than something must be wrong with me. Am I right? You know what I am talking about; the kind of perfection that society shoves down our throats. Well I've got news for you guys! Who the hell cares what they think!

Brittany has written a book about what it means to love yourself and all the flaws that make you, well you. Yes, ALL THE FLAWS. Let's face it everyone has them. Back in the summer before my seventh grade year, I went to church camp. It would be my first year ever going and I couldn't be more excited. I got to be away from my mom for three whole days! That's like forever when you're a kid. Anyways, everything was going just fine; we told scary ghost stories, played lots of fun games, talked about God, and one word - swimming. Yes, swimming was a huge highlight for me at girls came. See, it was in the pool that I broke my nose. How you might ask? I was just minding my own business swimming with my shark-like goggles when a girl jump into the pull right on top of me. The impact not only broke the goggles but my nose as well. I didn't even cry! I calmly got out of the pool and went to lay down in my bunk.

It wasn't until the end of the three days when my parents went to pick me up, that they noticed my nose looked crooked. I ended up going to a doctor who later did surgery to fix it. Needless to say, the surgery didn't work or whatever. My nose still looked crooked. And that my friends is the first time I have ever openly admitted my nose is less than perfect. Usually the only time I admit it, is if someone asks me outright. Why am I telling you this? Well if Brittany is brave enough to go and put herself out there by showing the world that plus size women are beautiful too. Then I can admit that my broken nose doesn't define me. It's just something part of me that makes me unique.

I'm not going to lie. Before I was contacted review this book, I had no idea who Brittany was. I wish I knew about her sooner because just reading her book has helped me in so many ways already. It's nice to see someone be real that's also an advocate for such a great cause. So many women out there need to know that they are beautiful, even me. It's hard though. Sometimes I feel alone and wonder if anyone out there has ever felt the way I have. Looking in the mirror is like a form of torture. I have in my head the way I want to and am supposed to look. Then I look in the mirror and bam! It's like why me! Why couldn't I have looked like one of those beautiful Victoria Secret models?

And see where I am going? This is how it is on a daily. I find a wonderful book such as Fat Girl Walking; I read it and know I'm not alone. Then that doubt starts creeping in. It's a never ending cycle. Okay, I need to stop. I don't want this to turn into some preachy blog post. My whole point out of all of this, is that I loved the book. I loved catching a glimpse into Brittany's life, her many struggles, and of course her beautiful success. The success of learning to love the skin she is in. Ever inch of it!

Women around the world. Let's start picking each other up instead of shaming. Sharing what we think is beautiful about ourselves instead of the negative. (Like me with my doubts about everything. But if we're being honest here it's probably the depression talking.) Please do yourself a favor and pick this beauty up. You won't regret it. This is for the ones who need a good laugh with an equally good cry. Love yourself! Even when you don't think you can.

Excerpt: from Chapter 13:

NOW WHAT?

My fitness and body aspirations at thirty are different from my aspirations at twenty. At twenty, I just assumed I’d work out until I was so tiny, people became concerned for my health and I’d roll my eyes at them from my Victoria’s Secret bras and Abercrombie jeans. Now I just want to maintain my current weight so I don’t need to buy new clothes. When you look at weight loss, it’s often clothing driven.

Weddings, vacations, and high school reunions, all things you are supposed to be thin for. But what if you have a gorgeous wedding dress in your current size, loads of flattering bathing suits, and a killer pair of jeans? Starving myself has suddenly become a moot point. I have options; I’m no longer a fashion pariah. So where does that leave my weight? Well, unless I’m sitting atop you, what I weigh is really none of your business.

I like to put good food in my mouth, and while I am aware of the calories I ingest, instead of cutting them I make them count. I have a full-on love affair with food, appreciating the different cultures and processes within it. In fact, I take entire vacations around eating. It’s how I remember where I’ve been; I’ve either eaten, thrown up, or started my period without the proper supplies there.

Beignets with my best friend in New Orleans. Too much rum on the beaches of Playa del Carmen on our second honeymoon. Orlando, Florida, the city of emergency men’s tube sock maxi-pads.

You see, these flabby parts aren’t problem areas; they’re parts of a scrapbook.

ARC Review: ARROW'S HELL(Wind Dragon's Motorcycle Club,#2) by Chantal Fernando

Blurb:
Being the younger sister of a Wind Dragons MC member isn’t as great as you’d think it would be.

I can’t escape the details of my brother’s exploits.
No one tells me anything.
Men who know who I am tend to stay away from me.

And worst of all:
The members of the MC are off-limits.

When Arrow catches my eye, I make it my mission to make him happy again.

When I fall head over heels in love with him, I just hope he will be there to catch me.
And that my brother doesn’t kill him.

Review:
Okay I'm going to be the first to admit, I've never been a huge MC fan. Don't throw tomatoes at me! I have no idea why but I'm more of a rock star lover type of girl. But I was offered to review Arrow's Hell so I was like why not? Right? I went and bought the first book, Dragon's Lair and finished it in one sitting. I was so engrossed! (I then proceeded to buying any and every type of MC book out there!) Anyways, as you see, I'm now an MC fan. In Dragon's Lair, I fell in love with Arrow. I loved his attitude and I desperately wanted his story; especially his story with Mary. But as you guys know...something terrible happened in the first book.

So that's kind of where we are now in Arrow's Hell. It's been five years and Arrow has been a celibate and miserable man. He feels like maybe that's what he deserves. Since the woman he loved doesn't get to experience the pleasures of life since she died. I was happy to see that for the prologue we got to get in Arrow's head but then the rest of the book is in Anna's point of view. If you guys remember in the first book, Anna was merely mentioned by her brother Rake when he was showing a picture of her to Faye. That was it though. In Arrow's Hell we get to see a whole lot more from her.

Anna is spunky and has a kick ass attitude. I'll admit that it took me a second to get used to her due to the fact that I had my hopes set of getting a story about Arrow and Mary. But I had to get over it, much like Arrow did. In the book Anna tries so hard to get Arrow's attention and for the most part he ignores her. But you know that his walls are crumbling and it's only a matter of time before they tumble down. He's thick headed though but lucky for him Anna isn't letting him go without a fight.

Her brother Rake is the typical big brother. He's very protective and he's already warned everyone in the club that Anna is one hundred percent off limits! Which is totally unfair because Anna isn't a child. What happens when you tell someone NOT to do something? Well, they rebel and do the exact opposite. The interaction between the two main characters was sexy and sweet at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed traveling on this journey with them.

Overall, if you were a fan of the first book(and even if you weren't) I suggest picking this one up asap. It was sexy and so gritty; I loved it! I can't wait to get more books in this series. Next is Tracker...sigh. I really would love to have Rake's story, I think he's my favorite of the bunch.

Four centuries ago, in a small Scottish village, three baby girls escaped the wrath of a witch hunter. Today, one young woman will learn about her secret history, her heart's destiny, and the sisters she never knew she had...

With her blue-black hair and dark eyes, Raye Larsen has never fit in with the Scandinavian community of New Bergin, Wisconsin. Being adopted is part of the reason she feels like an outsider, but what really sets Raye apart is her ability to see dead people. Everywhere.

She’s learned to keep her visions to herself . . . until she stumbles onto the ghost of a murder victim who needs Raye’s help. Enter Bobby Doucet, a distractingly handsome homicide detective who has been tracking a killer all the way from New Orleans. Could this be the break in his case he’s been looking for all along?

Meanwhile, the deeper Raye gets involved with the case—and with Bobby—the closer she comes to unlocking the mystery of her own origins. What she discovers about herself could destroy everything she knows . . . and everyone she loves. Is finding the truth worth the risk?

Filled with dark magic, dazzling romance, and dire suspense, this is the first book in a thrilling new series by New York Times bestselling author Lori Handeland.

Review:
Calling all PNR fans! Are you looking for a new paranormal book full of sexy characters, a fast paced storyline, and an all around fun read? Look no further. In the Air Tonight is as mysterious as it is romantic. The story starts off four hundred years into the past. It's there we meet Henry and Prudence; witches that are about to get burned at the stake. Meanwhile, they have three baby girls that they must send into the future to remain safe.

Fast-forward four hundred years and we meet Raye; the girl who never quite fit in. She doesn't look like anyone in town (making her very different indeed) and she can see and interact with the dead! Very creepy if you ask me! The beginning of the story started off too slow. Once the ball got moving though, the more I wanted to read and know more about the characters. Bobby Doucet is a detective all the way from New Orleans. He gets brought all the way to New Bergin, Wisconsin because a case
he has been working on down in Louisiana resemble what's going on in New Bergin.

Bobby and Raye decide to start working together admittedly after Raye has a brush with the killer. The two aren't able to hold back the insane chemistry they have between one another. Will they be able to help find a way to brig to light a past Raye didn't really know she had? What will happen once Bobby goes back down to New Orleans?

The supporting characters were just as appealing as the two leads. You invest yourself in the story and by the end of it, you want more. Good thing the second one comes out in a few weeks! I look forward to seeing more of where and how the sisters stories will end. Make sure you pick this one up!

Blog Tour Review + Giveaway: THE BONES OF YOU by Debbie Howells

Publisher: Kensington
Publication: June 30, 2015
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Source: e-Arc
Rating: 4 Stars

Add to Goodreads: http://bit.ly/1RraDWu

Blurb:
A stunning, wonderfully assured psychological thriller that evokes Gillian Flynn and Alice Sebold, The Bones of You revolves around a young girl’s murder and one woman’s obsession with uncovering the secrets in an idyllic English village.

I have a gardener’s inherent belief in the natural order of things. Soft‑petalled flowers that go to seed. The resolute passage of the seasons. Swallows that fly thousands of miles to follow the eternal summer.

Children who don’t die before their parents.

When Kate receives a phone call with news that Rosie Anderson is missing, she’s stunned and disturbed. Rosie is eighteen, the same age as Kate’s daughter, and a beautiful, quiet, and kind young woman. Though the locals are optimistic—girls like Rosie don’t get into real trouble—Kate’s sense of foreboding is confirmed when Rosie is found fatally beaten and stabbed.

Who would kill the perfect daughter, from the perfect family? Yet the more Kate entwines herself with the Andersons—graceful mother Jo, renowned journalist father Neal, watchful younger sister Delphine—the more she is convinced that not everything is as it seems. Anonymous notes arrive, urging Kate to unravel the tangled threads of Rosie’s life and death, though she has no idea where they will lead.

Weaving flashbacks from Rosie’s perspective into a tautly plotted narrative, The Bones of You is a gripping, haunting novel of sacrifices and lies, desperation and love.

Review:
"Everyone has a destiny. Rosie told me she knows what hers is. She's known for awhile. She told me she's going to die."

I'm a huge fan of a good thriller and for the most part I really enjoyed this book. It had a bit of a slow start and I'll admit that the in the beginning the constant switching of pov would confuse me. It just felt like the booked jumped around an awful lot. Usually I can read different pov that switch suddenly with no problem what so ever, but in this case it made it difficult for me to read. Maybe the e-arc that I had made the book's formatting unbearable but for a second there I wasn't sure I would even be able to finish the book.

Thank goodness I did! The second half of the book was much better in my opinion and had some gasp-worthy moments. I guessed pretty early on who I thought the killer was but I think that the author may want us to know who it is from the very beginning. It was still shocking all the same when it finally came to light what really happened that fateful night. I'll even admit I shed a tear or two. I'm definitely one of those readers who feels very deeply when reading, so when I read about what happened, it broke my heart. The Bones of You deals with abuse; emotional, physical, and some sexual. At times it was hard to read because victims of any type of abuse is just a touchy subject for me personally. It hit a huge nerve that made me angry.

Rosie, the young girl who has gone missing, is one of the pov's that we follow. Although we go back in time and see what her life was like growing up. It wasn't such a great life. Rosie saw things that no child should ever have to see and she had things happen to her that should have never happened to her either. But it did. From the outside looking in, she and her family have the perfect life. Everyone knows though, that there is no such thing as perfect. Along with Rosie, we meet Kate. And it's up to her to help figure out what it is that happened to Rosie. Along the way, we see and learn that things aren't always what they seem. At all.

Overall, I think this was a great book. It's full of easy enough characters to like and the plot was just right. I look forward to reading more from the author. I hope that she has more thrillers coming out because I'm always looking for the next one to read that will keep me up reading at all hours of the night.

AUTHOR Q&A WITH DEBBIE HOWELLS:

1.       When did you start writing?

I began writing in earnest about five years ago, women’s fiction which was what I liked to read.  But I also wanted to write books that addressed more serious real-life issues as well.  I think with Wildflowers I achieved that. It’s had some wonderful reviews on Amazon, but though 6 agents asked to read the full manuscript, no-one actually took me on.

The Bones of You is a change of genre.  How did you come to write it?

I’d put everything I had into Wildflowers and it came so close, but not close enough.  I knew then I had to write something different.  Everyone says, write about what you know about.  I think that’s true, but I think also, you have to appeal to the market.  That said, I don’t think it’s possible to write without your heart one hundred per cent in it.

Were you surprised with the reaction you got from agents and publishers?

Completely blown away!  It was beyond my wildest dreams.  There are phone calls and emails from that time that I will never, ever forget.  When you’ve worked so hard for so long, battled rejection but kept going anyway, to reach the point where I’m being published is something I’m so excited about – and enormously grateful for.

What advice do you have for other writers?

There are so many brilliant, unpublished writers out there.  Finding an agent and a publisher mean you have to write a good book, but it takes luck, too - in spadefuls -  to hit the right person with the right idea when the market’s right… It’s also a massively subjective industry.  What one person loves, another wouldn’t give the time of day to.  And no-one can predict tomorrow’s bestsellers.

If you can’t find an agent to take you on, consider self-publishing.  A number of authors have had huge success this way and in any case, you learn from it.  Then keep writing – the next book, the one after.  If you don’t, you’ll never know...

Have you written your next book?

I finished it just before Christmas.  It’s another psychological thriller about not just what we hide from other people, but from ourselves, too.  It’s about a washed-up lawyer and a woman he used to love, who’s suspected of a murder.  He’s determined to prove her innocence but an overdose has left her in a coma. As well as a thriller, it’s also a love story.
