Welcome to Sugartown by Carmen Jenner!!

Ana Belle never wanted anything more than to hang up her apron, jump on her Vespa and ride off into the sunset, leaving Sugartown in the dust.

Elijah Cade never wanted anything more than a hot meal, a side of hot arse and a soft place to lay his head at night where he could forget about his past.

But you know what they say about wanting: you always want what you can’t have.

Nineteen year-old virgin Ana is about to discover that’s not quite true because a six foot three, hotter than hell, tattooed, Aussie sex god just rode into town. He’s had a taste of her pie and he wants more–no really, Ana bakes pies for a living, get your mind out of the gutter.

She’d be willing to hand over everything tied up in a big red bow, there’s just one problem; Elijah has secrets dirtier than last week’s underwear. Secrets that won't just break Ana’s heart, but put her life at risk, too. When those secrets come to light, their relationship is pushed to breaking point.

Add to that a psychotic nympho best friend, an overbearing father, a cuter than humanly possible kid brother, a wanton womanizing cousin, the ex from hell, and more pies than you could poke a ... err ... stick ... at.

And you thought small towns were boring.

Welcome to Sugartown.

*Content Warning. Intended for a mature 18+ audience. Contains explicit sex, oodles of profanity and a crap-tonne of AWKWARD.

“You want me to beat him up?”

I laugh. “No Elijah, I don’t want you to get arrested for beating up some moron from my past.”

“You wanna make him so fucking jealous he can’t see straight?” he asks in all seriousness. It’s absurd. I shouldn’t give a crap about what Scott and his brainless goons think of me, and yet the idea of shoving someone as hot – and yeah, okay, pretty damn scary looking – as Elijah under his nose sends a thrill through me. I find myself nodding, though the way Elijah’s smiling at me makes me realise that I’ve no idea what I just agreed to.

“Then kiss me.”

“What? How do you even know he’s looking?”

“You, in this outfit? Trust me, he’s looking.”

“What’s wrong with this outfit?” I say, but the words peter off with the way he’s looking at me. I know that look. That’s the way he looks at my pies when he comes in for lunch, like he hasn’t had a meal in days. I want to be the meal.

He leans in so close I can feel his warm breath brush my lips. “You gotta kiss me back.”

“Huh?”

“I’m going to kiss you now, and despite the fact that you don’t like me, if you wanna make this dickhead jealous, you gotta kiss me with all you got.”

I can smell the whisky on his breath. I haven’t touched whisky since I was seventeen and got so sick I just narrowly escaped having my stomach pumped. I swore I would never touch the stuff again, and even the smell usually has me dry reaching, but suddenly I’m finding it a very welcome scent, and the fact that I’m hyperventilating has nothing to do with alcohol of any kind.

“I never said I didn’t like you. In fact, I don’t know anything about you.”

“Ana?”

“Yeah?”

“Shut up,” he says, and mashes his lips to mine. His mouth is hot on mine, and at first, it’s awkward. I have no idea if I’m kissing Elijah because I want to make Scott mad with jealousy or if I’m kissing him simply because I want to. He pulls back to study my face. I try to rein in my bemused expression, but frankly, I don’t think I’m fooling anyone. I probably look like a stunned mullet. Elijah looks kind of intense. Intense and a little angry.

“That’s all you got? Seriously? Are you even trying to make him jealous? ‘Cause I gotta say, I think your method sucks.” I pull his face back to mine and take him with my mouth. I force my tongue inside while his eyes are still on me. He’s surprised, but when I clasp my hands behind his neck and push myself against him, his arm snakes around my back, his fingers tangle in my hair and he kisses me so hard and deep we’re practically consuming each other.

Elijah walks us back a step until I’m pushed up against the wall. He’s found his way between my thighs and the pressure of his erection against my pubic bone elicts a moan from me. “You wanna get outta here?”

“Okay.”

Elijah is constantly on the move, never staying in one spot for long. When he moves to a small place called Sugartown, he expects this will be the case yet again. What he wasn’t counting on, however, was a girl named Ana. The two have insane chemistry and as they get closer, the secret that Elijah is harboring threatens to destroy everything he’s come to want. Will their love be able to survive, or will this ruin everything?

If you’ve already read this book then I just can’t express to you enough how amazingly awesome you are! Seriously, you’re amazeballs dipped in awesomesauce!

If you’ve bought it and haven’t started it as of yet, then stop what you’re doing (yes, that includes reading this review) and get to reading! Do you have any idea what you’re missing?! Just don’t get too attached to Elijah. He’s mine. He and Ana just haven’t gotten that memo yet!

As I’m sure you can already tell; I absolutely love this book! Welcome to Sugartown was an absolute surprise as it managed to make me feel so many different things during the course of the story. I laughed, cried, and even got angry enough to want to throw my kindle across the room. Luckily I managed to control that urge.

The first half of this book had me laughing so much that I could no longer read it while I was at work. The characters are sarcastic, funny, loyal to one another, and just so damn personable that you actually feel like you’re a part of the group. You can’t help but form a connection to them. This is the first book in a long while where even the side characters - the over-protective Father, Bob; the crazy best friend, Holly; the sexy hot cousin, Jackson; and the adorably cute brother, Sammy - all keep you coming back for more too! It’s not JUST about the hero and heroine, and I thoroughly enjoyed that!

However, this book is not all rainbows and butterflies. Around the midway point of the novel things take a turn and nose dive off a cliff into oh hell-no-ville. Events go from bad to worse and the story gets a bit dark for a while. There is some violence in this book as well as a scene dealing with rape. I just felt the need to disclose that since it can be a very sensitive subject for some. Yet I found myself thoroughly enjoying the story, even when it shook hands with a hard limit of mine. I’m always grateful when a novel doesn’t follow suit with all of the others, and that was definitely the case with this one!

I give this book 5 Oh. My. God. I LOVE it stars! It had my attention from start to finish, and I didn't want to put it down. This was a fantastic debut novel from the lovely Carmen Jenner. I love the voice that she gives her characters, and the way that she can draw me into her world quite quickly. I really can’t wait to see what she has in store for her next book!

I was lucky enough to be able to sit down with Elijah and Ana for their FIRST interview ever, and I've got to tell you, they were such sweethearts!

We met in the lobby of the hotel and the following is their unedited, uncensored responses. I just couldn’t bear to cut a single thing out. I know I enjoyed everything they had to say, and I’m sure you will too!!

Thank you so much for agreeing to do this, Elijah and Ana! I absolutely LOVED reading your story. For those people just coming on board, can you personally tell them what they should expect?

Ana: Hi Sarah, thanks for having us.
Elijah: Hey Sarah. *leans in and whispers to Ana* I thought this thing was catered?
Ana: *Rolls eyes* There'll be food at the hotel.
Elijah: But I'm hungry now.
Ana: *rifles through handbag before fishing out a takeaway container containing pie and handing it to Elijah.*
Elijah: Damn baby girl, you always know just what I want.
Ana: Elijah, there's only ever two things you want: pie and er ... my pie. *blushes* Where were we? Right, our story. It's kinda complicated.
Elijah: Sex.
Ana: *shoots Elijah dirty look* Sex? Really? That's what you took away from this whole damn experience? Just sex?
Elijah: *shrugs and shovels more pie in his mouth* There was pie, too.
Ana: Yeah, and pain, heartache, lies and bikers.
Elijah: Recliner sex. *shoots Ana a wink*
Ana: Well, there was that.

*Shakes head laughing* Ana, when you first met Elijah, you decided to have some fun at his expense. Not that I blame you, it WAS a good joke after all, but what were you hoping to accomplish with your antics?

Ana: Honestly I don't really know. I don't think I was thinking He just came strutting through the shop in all his leather, flashing his dimples and expecting us to fall all over ourselves. That ego had to be knocked down a few pegs.
Elijah: Ha! Liar. You told me it was because you wanted to see me parading around without a shirt.
Ana: *winces* Guilty.
Elijah: You know you only had to say the word, Darlin', and I could have skipped making a complete tool outta myself in front of your dad.
Ana: I know, but where's the fun in that?
Elijah: The fun would've been in taking you out back and getting beneath that sexy uniform you wear.
Ana: *eyes widen* You know my dad is going to be reading this, right?
Elijah: Shit.
Ana: Yeah. So much for not making a complete tool out of yourself.

*Sigh* Ana, I hold nothing against you for wanting to see him parade around without a shirt. Actually I don't think ANY of us blame you.

Elijah: *smiles wide enough that the dimples come out swinging*
Ana: Please do not encourage him, Sarah. He's like a dog with a bone.
Elijah: bone-r.
Ana: See, what I mean? Calm down, Cade, or I'm putting a muzzle on you.
Elijah: *waggles brows* Kinky.

*Smiling* Now you two had such a good time in the beginning of your story. I mean, I couldn't read a bit of it without laughing or smiling. Then things turned kind of dark. Elijah, I don't know how you did it, but you managed to NOT make me hate you through it all. *Narrows eyes at Elijah* Don't get me wrong. I still wanted to punch you for what you did to Ana, but it would have been a punch that I would have felt bad about later. Anyway, if you could go back ... would you have been up front with Ana about everything? Or do you feel that you would have chosen the same course that you did? That this was really the only way things could have played out?

Elijah: Er... *rubs back of neck* Yeah, looking back, there's a lot of things I would have done differently. I fucked up bad. For a while there it seemed like I couldn't breathe without fucking up left right and center and doing the wrong thing by Ana.
Ana: *squeezes Elijah's hand* I think we both made a lot of mistakes and we've both paid accordingly for it. Who knows what might have happened if we'd both done things differently? I do know we're both still healing from all we went through and we're probably closer because of it.

I don't doubt that for a second. Sitting here, watching the two of you together ... it's obvious how much you two truly love one another.

Elijah: Yeah, she's alright. I might have to trade her in when things start saggin' though. *winks*
Ana: *punches Elijah's arm* So NOT funny, Cade.
Elijah: Jesus, woman. Will you stop trying to beat the shit outta me please?
Ana: Only if you stop being an arse.
Elijah:: *to Sarah* No matter what I do I'm always in the bloody dog house.
Ana: True. But at least it gives you more time to play with your bone-r.
Elijah: Yeah, but it's only fun if you watch, baby girl.

Oh my God. You guys are too much! Let's talk about Holly for a second. Elijah, you had quite a few interesting run-ins with her in the beginning. Obviously things started to change as more time passed. What did you think of her then, and what do you think of her now?

Elijah:: She's still a crazy ranga midget.
Ana: You know she'll be reading this too, right?
Sarah: Haha. Not helping yourself here!
Elijah: Damn it! What the hell good is getting out of Sugartown if everyone's still bloody breathing down our necks?
Ana: They don't get to read about what goes on in the hotel room.
Elijah: *chokes on a sip of beer, clears throat and shifts uncomfortably* What was the question again?
Sarah: Holly, how do you feel about her now?
Elijah: Still a crazy ranga midget.
Ana: They actually get along really well now.
Elijah: Yeah, now she's just hulkin' out on Jackson, poor bastard.
Ana: In her defense, he does kinda deserve it.

Jackson seems like he can take care of himself, but thank you for bringing him up, Elijah! There's definitely plenty happening between those two crazy kids! I also hear that they're working on sharing their story with everyone too! Is that true? If so, what should we expect from them?

Elijah: *rolls eyes* I don't know why the hell they want to go through all that. You'd think they wouldda learned from us, right?
Ana: *shoots Elijah a hard glare* What's that supposed to mean?
Elijah: *gulps* Nothing ... It means nothing. I just don't know who's going to read that shit. I mean it's Holly and Jackson, there's nothing to them but fighting and fuc-
Ana: Friendship! *shoots daggers at Elijah* They're just friends.
Elijah: yeah, friends that like to fu ... *bulks at Ana's expression* fun. Friends that like to have fun. *in an aside to Sarah* And make one another's lives as miserable as possible.
Ana: *to Sarah* Holly's kind of intense these days with all that she has going on. Sometimes Jackson's sympathetic to that, and other times he needs reminding that men need their family jewels intact if they ever want to have children of their own someday.
Elijah: *laughing* Crazy ranga midget.

They seem like a whole lot of crazy, in a fun way of course, and you two are living with them! What's that like?

Elijah: Loud!
Ana: Elijah!
Elijah: *shrugs* It's true.
Ana: He does kind of have a point.
Elijah: It's like a lucky dip, you shove your hand in the bowl, thinking you're gonna get something awesome, but it all ends in tears cause you wind up with some piss poor piece of crap toy that no one's ever heard of instead of the GI Joe you thought you were gonna get.
*Ana and Sarah glance at one another before laughing*
Ana: Aw, poor baby. Do you need me to buy you an action figure, Cade?
Elijah: Baby girl, I need to put you over my knee the second we get back to our hotel room.
Ana: *laughter dies abruptly*
Elijah: Then you can buy me an action figure *winks at Sarah*
Ana: *shakes head* Next question.

*Smirks* Whatever. We all know that once you go back to your hotel room, you're not coming out for quite some time; especially not for some toy. *Looks at Elijah* I know I left that open, don't go there!

Ana: Yes Elijah, don't go there.
Elijah: *holds hands up in surrender* wasn't gonna.

Anyway, I'm sure everyone wants to know what lies ahead for the two of you. Any plans??

Elijah: You mean aside from seeing nothing but the inside of our hotel room for the next few days?
Ana: She means the future, Cade. You know, marriage, babies, swapping your bike for a minivan in order to take the kids to school.
Elijah: *sweating* NEXT QUESTION!
Ana: Boys are so ridiculous. *shakes head* For now we're just making up for lost time and enjoying being with one another.
Elijah: Speaking of lost time *waggles eyebrows*
Ana: Of course, I might just get tired of your sorry arse and kick you to the curb the next time you make inappropriate comments in an interview. *winks at Sarah*
Elijah: Baby girl, even then you'd never be rid of me.
Ana: That's true, It was kinda hard avoiding you when we lived in the same house and you worked right across the street.
Elijah: Hard. *sniggering* Yeah, that's exactly what it was.
Ana: You are such a child.

Haha. Ana, you certainly do have your hands full with this one! *Turns to Elijah* Don't go there either!

Ana: *to Elijah* No.
Elijah: But she was wide open, come on.
Ana: Zip it, Cade.

You two have been so wonderful in meeting with me, and I don't want to take up too much more of your afternoon. So why don't we play a little word association game before we go? I'll say a word, and you two tell me the FIRST thing that comes to mind.

Bob
Elijah: Shit! Where?
Ana: *laughs* Teddy bear

Sugartown
Ana: Home
Elijah: *smiles* Yeah, home

Pie
Elijah: Ana's
Ana: *laughs* Elijah
Elijah: How do I remind you of pie?
Ana: Oh please, every second word that comes out of your mouth is about tasting my pie.
Elijah: True. It's a nice pie.
Ana: See?

Holly
Ana: Awesome
Elijah: Fucking crazy!

Jackson
Ana: Annoying
Elijah: Still kicking my arse in video games.

Kids
Elijah: Er ... *clears throat*
Ana: Four
Elijah: Four?
Ana: As in I want four of them.
Elijah: Jesus woman, how many husbands are you having again?
Ana: Just the one. *smirks* But think of all the times you'll get to do that "thing" you love.
Elijah: Four, it is.

**Pulls out a bag and hands it to Ana** I almost forgot! Here's something you can use for your pie. *Looks at Elijah* Like the kind she bakes. In the shop. Those pies. Not, umm, her pie. *Laughs while looking at Ana* I just figured I'd make it clear before he got excited.

Ana: *laughs* Yeah, it's best to nip it in the bud early!
Elijah: *whispers in Ana's ear* I'll nip your bud.
Ana: *shakes head* See what I mean? Thanks so much for having us, Sarah! Oh, and thanks for the goodies, too! *pulls out can of whipped cream*
Elijah: *snatches can from Ana and swings her up over his shoulder*
Ana: Cade, put me down!
Elijah: Babe. Hotel room. Now. *runs for the door before turning back to Sarah* See ya, Sarah. It was swell, sweetheart! *smiles so wide those dimples come out swinging*

Synopsis

Graduate student Autumn McShane has had her share of heartbreak. She's been abandoned and betrayed and she lost her beloved mother in a tragic car accident five months ago. That loss damaged her body and fractured her spirit but she's learning to recover, until her ex-boyfriend returns to town, intent on making her life miserable.

Declan Fraser hates her ex as much as Autumn does, but the last thing she needs is to put her trust in the hands of another man, especially one like Declan: his hard body and lulling Irish accent makes more than a few girls weak-kneed. The talented rugby player is rude and sarcastic, with tattooed, muscular arms and a cocky attitude, but he's the only one who can help Autumn win an ill-advised bet that, if lost, could cost her more than she's willing to pay. The reluctant alliance between Declan and Autumn stirs up cravings she doesn't want to admit, but Declan is a hard man to resist.

Just when Autumn starts letting down her carefully constructed walls to the sexy bad boy, he betrays her when she needs him most. Autumn suspects Declan has secrets, and she is determined to uncover what drove him away from her, even if that means fraternizing with the enemy. But will the truth return Declan to her arms or add to the scars on her heart?

Excerpt

His skin is rough and there are blisters on his knuckles, on his palms. He has a player’s hand, calloused and slender, good for grabbing, holding the ball, and I find myself looking at how long his fingers are, the width of the joints, the show of vascular lines on the tops.

“What do you play?” I ask and he stops for a moment, notices me staring at his hands.

“Wing. Well, normally I’m wing. Tucker’s convinced Mullens to set me as scrumhalf.”

“Ah, so that explains it.”

“Explains what?”

“Why you hate Tucker.” He doesn’t respond, just returns to the bookshelf to grab another box and my gaze follows him, takes in the rigid set of his shoulders. “He’ll be gone at the end of the season, you know.”

“Hmm. If I’m lucky,” he says.

“Mullens is a good coach. I’ve known him forever and he’s friends with Ava.” A wrinkle forms between Declan’s eyebrows. “Dr. Winchell.”

“Thick as thieves with the president, aren’t you?”

“No. Well, yes, but it’s not what you think. She was my mom’s best friend. They’d known each other since college.”

He opens his mouth as though he wants to say something, but then just nods before he clears his throat. “Sayo mentioned it was a car crash?” When my eyes narrow, he shakes his head as though I shouldn’t be angry. “That was after she and the other two barked at me forever. Told me what an arse I was, how rude I was, how you didn’t deserve to be disrespected.” I relax and he continues. “You were hurt?”

“Yes.” My hands shake, tremble as they rest on the box in front of me and I can see myself bloody and still in the car, remembering the pain, the suffocating feeling of my mother’s loss. A breath tamps down the burn of tears in my eyes. “Three broken ribs, a completely busted up leg, and a lacerated abdomen. I had more scrapes and bruises than even you’ve probably had.”

“I’ve had many. Loads of scars as well.”

I don’t know what possesses me to do it, perhaps some subconscious need to prove how tough I am, that I’m not some sniggering girly girl, but I lift up the side of my shirt and show Declan the top of my incision from the surgery. It’s a horrid, long line still pink that runs from my hip to just below my bellybutton.

“A steel rod from the truck that hit us pinned me to the seat. Seven hour surgery.” Declan winces. The scar had faded and the doctors told me that over time it would continue to diminish, but it would never disappear completely. Five months on and it’s still quite disgusting.

Seemingly without thinking about it, Declan reaches down and rubs his thumb against my scar and at his touch, my stomach flips. I know he can see the light hairs on my stomach stand on end and how my skin covers in goose bumps. He looks at my face again and once more his eyes linger too long in my eyes, then down to my lips. But then he breaks contact and unbuttons his shirt.

“I’ve got a few nasty ones as well. See this?” He lifts his undershirt back over his left shoulder and I nod, curious of his point, his intentions. “Rory McDonald pushed me straight through the rusty, broken uprights when I was fifteen. Twenty-nine stiches that ached like a bugger. And here,” he lowers his shirt then pulls up the hem to show me a smooth gash just below his bellybutton. “Mickey Douglas forgot to ditch his watch during a practice match when I was eighteen. Fecking thing nearly ripped me in half when he lined me up and smashed me as I went for a try-scoring pass.” The scar is faint, barely noticeable and doesn’t register really as I am distracted by muscles so taut that I can see the lines across his stomach. There is a long trail of black hair below his navel that disappears beneath his belt and I can’t help the wild dip of my stomach as I watch his bare skin.

“That’s um, yeah.” I swallow against the dryness in my mouth and Declan steps closer, his shirt still raised. Again I feel him watching me, and I don’t realize how close we are standing until he drops his shirt. There is no smile on his face, no condescending little grin that tells me he thinks I’m an idiot.

I don’t react when Declan reaches for my face or when his hand cups my cheek. The tips of his fingers are smooth, not like the rough callouses on the tops and palms of his hands. I’m about to speak, say something glib, sarcastic, but just then Declan rubs his thumb across my bottom lip, a mimic of what I’d done to him Thursday night on the sidewalk. I can only manage to watch his head lower until his lips are at my ear. When he whispers, his voice is low, a soft rasp that nears a growl and instantly makes my body ache.

“Like what you see, love?”

He steps back and the crackle present in the air, the one I’d forced the other night, returns, collects into the stillness of the basement. The seconds stretch, he moves forward, and the only sound I can hear is the low hum of the lights overhead and my own heartbeat thumping in my ears.

“Yes….um, no…it’s not like that.”

“Liar.”

My Review

Chasing Serenity is the type of novel that will draw you in with its loveable characters and beautiful community. There’s also the matter of the Irish accent, and I’m a sucker for accents!

Autumn McShane has had her share of heartbreak. Her Father left when she was younger, she was in a HORRIBLE relationship with a man who ultimately left her, and her Mother was killed in a car accident – something that almost claimed her life as well. It’s easy to see why she would have abandonment issues and instead chooses to close herself off to anyone and everyone who tries to get close.

I personally loved Autumn. She had spunk and a fight in her that she tried so hard to hold onto. I also like that she had turned into the type of woman that wasn’t going to let a man walk all over her. Not anymore, anyways.

Declan Fraser is a bit arrogant and a whole lot loveable. He’s a rugby player and hates Autumn’s ex just as much as she does, if not more. The last thing he’s looking for is love yet there’s something about Autumn that pulls him in. He wants to know her, but will she allow him to break down her walls, or will she finally push him away for good?

What can I say about Declan? He’s a tattooed Irishman (I did mention that I love accents, right?) who is blunt and very caring, though a tad possessive, when it comes to Autumn. He seems to understand her better than others even though he’s only known her for a short time. I would love to have Declan in my life. Seriously, he’s on my Christmas list and everything.

I give Chasing Serenity 4 stars. Eden did a wonderful job painting the picture and it was very easy for me to visualize everything. From the town to the way she brought out the Irish accent through print, I was never left trying to fill in the blanks. I felt like I was there walking through the scenes with the characters, and that’s important to me. There were a few things grammatically that caught my eye, but nothing that would deter me from reading or recommending this book.

By Joanna Wylde
Available Jan. 28, 2014

Blurb:

Eight years ago, Sophie gave her heart—and her virginity—to Zach Barrett on a night that couldn’t have been less romantic or more embarrassing. Zach’s step-brother, a steely-muscled, tattooed biker named Ruger, caught them in the act, getting a peep show of Sophie he’s never forgotten.

She may have lost her dignity that fateful night, but Sophie also gained something precious—her son Noah. Unfortunately, Zach’s a deadbeat dad, leaving Ruger to be Noah’s only male role model. When he discovers Sophie and his nephew living in near poverty, Ruger takes matters into his own hands—with the help of the Reapers Motorcycle Club—to give them a better life.

Living with outlaw bikers wasn’t Sophie’s plan for her son, but Ruger isn’t giving her a choice. He’ll be there for Noah, whether she wants him or not. But Sophie does want him, has always wanted him. Now she’ll learn that taking a biker to bed can get a girl dirty in every way…

PROLOGUE

EIGHT YEARS AGO
COEUR D’ALENE, IDAHO
SOPHIE

“I’m gonna stick it in now.”
Zach’s voice was rough and full of urgent need.
I smelled him all around me, sweaty and hungry and so beautiful I could die. After tonight he’d be mine for real. His hand reached down between us, guiding the round, rubbery head of his penis as it nudged my opening. It felt weird. He pushed at me and I guess he missed, because it hit me too high and—
“Ouch! Shit, Zach, that hurts. I think you’re doing it wrong.”
He stopped immediately and grinned down at me, the gap between his front teeth teasing. Holy crap, I loved that grin. I’d had the biggest crush on Zach since we were freshmen, but he never noticed me, not until a couple of months ago. My folks didn’t let me out much, but I’d managed to get permission to stay with Lyssa for a night and we’d snuck out to a party in July. Zach had honed in and we’d been a couple ever since.
I’d gotten really good at sneaking out.
“Sorry, babe,” he murmured, leaning down to kiss me. I softened immediately, loving the feel of his lips ghosting across mine. He adjusted himself and started sliding into me again, slow and steady. This time he didn’t miss, and I stiffened as he stretched me open wide.
Then he hit a barrier and paused.
I opened my eyes and looked up at him. He looked back down at me and I knew right then and there I’d never love anyone half so much as I loved Zachary Barrett.
“Ready?” he whispered. I nodded.
He shoved into me and I squealed, pain ripping between my legs. Zach kept me pinned with his hips as I gasped, shocked. Then he pulled out and I tried to catch my breath. Before I could, though, he’d thrust back into me. Hard.Ouch.
“Holy shit, you’re tight,” he muttered. He pushed himself up on his hands, throwing his head back as he pumped into my body, over and over, eyes closed and face straining with hunger.
I don’t know what I’d expected.
I mean, I wasn’t stupid. I knew it wouldn’t be perfect the first time, no matter what the romance books said. And it didn’t hurt that much. But it sure as shit didn’t feel good, either.
Zach moved faster, and I turned my head on the couch to look across the small apartment. His brother’s, apparently. We had it for the night—it was supposed to be our special, perfect time together. I’d expected flowers or soft music and wine or something. Stupid. Zach had pizza and some beer from his brother’s fridge.
“Ouch,” I muttered again as he paused, face twisting.
“Shit, I’m gonna come,” he gasped. I felt his penis throb deep inside, almost twitching. It was weird. Really weird. And nothing like I’d seen in movies—not even a little bit.
Was that it?
Huh . . .
“Oh, fuck that’s good.”
The apartment door opened as Zach collapsed between my legs, oblivious to the world. I couldn’t do anything but watch in horror as a man walked in.
I didn’t know him, but he couldn’t have been Zach’s brother. He didn’t look anything like Zach, who was taller than me, but not by a whole lot. This guy was really tall, and muscular in the way men who work with their hands get from heavy lifting on the job.
He wore a black leather vest with patches over a ratty T-shirt and jeans that had streaks of dark motor oil or grease or something. A half rack of beer dangled from one hand. His hair was short and dark. Almost military. His lip was pierced and he wore a two rings in his left ear and one in his right, like a pirate. Eyebrow was pierced, too. His features were bluntly handsome, but nobody would ever call him pretty. Big black boots covered his feet, and the chain from his wallet hung low across his hip. One of his arms had a full-sleeve tattoo. The other had a skull with crossed blades behind it.
He stopped in the doorway and looked us over, slowly shaking his head.
“I told you what I’d do if you broke into my place again,” he said quietly. Zach popped up and his face went white. His entire body—with one notable exception—stiffened. I felt that exception slither out of me, along with some fluid, and realized we hadn’t even bothered to put a towel down or anything.
Ewww.
But how was I supposed to know we’d need a towel?
“Shit,” Zach said, his voice a tight squeak. “Ruger, I can explain—”
“Don’t fuckin’ explain,” Ruger said, pushing forward into the room. He slammed the door shut behind him and walked over to the couch. I tried to hide my head in Zach’s chest, more ashamed and embarrassed than I’d ever been in my life.
Flowers. Were flowers too much to ask?
“Jesus Christ, what is she? Twelve?” Ruger asked, giving the couch a kick. It shuddered under me, and Zach sat up, pulling away from my body. I shrieked and pushed my hands down between us, trying to cover myself from his brother’s gaze.
Shit. SHIT.
Then it got worse.
The brother—Rooger? whatever the hell kind of namethat was—looked right at me as he leaned across my body, grabbing a folded blanket from the back of the couch.
He tossed it over my crotch.
I moaned and died a little inside. My legs were still spread wide, my skirt up high around my waist. He’d seen everything. Everything. This was supposed to be the most romantic night of my life and now I just wanted to go home and cry.
“I’m takin’ a shower and by the time I’m done, you need to be gone,” Ruger said, getting in Zach’s face. My boyfriend flinched. “And stay the fuck outta my apartment.”
With that, he walked down the hall to the bathroom, banging the door shut. Seconds later I heard the shower come on. Zach jumped up, muttering.
“Asshole. He’s such a goddamn asshole.”
“Was that your brother?”
“Yeah. He’s a prick.”
I sat up and straightened my shirt. Thank God I hadn’t taken it off. Zach loved to touch my breasts, but we’d actually moved pretty fast once we got started. I managed to get to my feet, holding the blanket in front of me while I pulled down my skirt. I had no idea where my panties had gone, but a quick look around didn’t reveal them. I leaned over the couch, digging in the pillows, hunting. No luck, but I managed to stick my hand in the disgusting wet spot we’d left behind.
I felt like such a whore.
“Fuck!” Zach yelled behind me. My head jerked up—how could things possibly get any worse? “Holy fuck, I cannot fucking believe this!”
“What’s wrong?”
“The condom broke,” he said, eyes wide. “The fucking condom broke. This has got to be the worst night of my life. You better not be pregnant.”
The air froze in my lungs. Apparently things could get worse.
Zach held the broken rubber out toward me. I stared down at the nasty thing, not quite believing my bad luck.
“Did you do it wrong?” I whispered. He shrugged, not answering.
“It’s probably okay,” I said after another long pause. “I mean, my period just ended. You can’t get pregnant that soon after your period, right?”
“Um, yeah, probably,” he said, flushing and looking away. “I didn’t really pay attention to that shit in class. I mean, I always use a condom. Always. They never break, not even—”
My breath caught and I felt hot tears well up in my eyes.
“You told me you’d only done it once before,” I said softly. He winced.
“I’ve never done it with anyone I loved before,” he said, dropping the broken rubber and grabbing for my hand. I tried to tug away. The mess on his fingers grossed me out, but when he pulled me in tight and wrapped his arms around me, I caved.
“Hey, it’s gonna be okay,” he muttered, rubbing my back as I snuffled against his shirt. “It’ll be fine. We’re fine. And I’m sorry I wasn’t honest with you. I was afraid you wouldn’t stick with me if you knew I’d been stupid before. I don’t care about any other girls and I never will. I just want to be with you.”
“Okay,” I said, pulling myself together. He shouldn’t have lied, but at least he owned up to it. Mature couples worked through hard stuff all the time, right? “Um, we should probably get out of here. Your brother looked pretty pissed. I thought he gave you a key?”
“My stepmom has an emergency key,” he said, shrugging. “I took it. He was supposed to be out of town. Grab the pizza.”
“Should we leave some for your brother?”
“Screw him. And he’s my stepbrother. We’re not even really related.”
Oookay.
I found my shoes and slipped them on, then got my purse and the pizza. I still didn’t know where my panties were, but just then I heard the shower stop.
We needed to get out.
Zach glanced over at the bathroom, then winked at me as he grabbed the half rack off the counter.
“C’mon,” he said, taking my hand and pulling me toward the door.
“You’re stealing his beer?” I asked, feeling a little sick. “Seriously?”
“Fuck him,” Zach said, narrowing his eyes at me. “He’s a total dick, thinks he’s better than everyone else. Him and his stupid fucking motorcycle club. They’re all assholes and criminals, and he is, too. Probably stole it in the first place. And he can buy more any time he wants, not like us. We’ll take it to Kimber’s. Her parents are in Mexico.”
We jogged down the apartment complex stairs, then crossed the parking lot to his truck. It was kind of old, but at least the full-sized Ford’s king cab had plenty of room. We’d take it out sometimes, just the two of us, and spend hours lying in the bed under the stars, kissing and laughing. Other times we packed three or four couples in, all sitting on each other’s laps.
Zach hadn’t done such a great job tonight, but that wasn’t his fault. Sometimes life just didn’t follow the plan. I was still crazy about him, though.
“Hey,” I said, stopping him as he opened the driver’s side door.
I turned him around and popped up onto my toes, kissing him long and slow. “I love you.”
“I love you, too, babe,” Zach said, smoothing my hair back behind my ear. I melted when he did that—made me feel all safe and protected. “Now let’s go kill some of those beers. Shit, fuckin’ crazy night. My brother is such a dick.”
I rolled my eyes and laughed as I hauled ass around the truck.
So losing my virginity hadn’t been perfect and beautiful and all that. But at least it was over and Zach loved me.
