Synopsis:

Marry me.

Two words Kalli Montgomery never expected to say out loud to Xavier Cruz, even though she's been in love with the sexy, single father for as long as she can remember. Unfortunately, she hasn't just been friend-zoned for the past ten years. No, even worse, he's treated her like a little sister, no matter how hard she tried to prove she could be so much more. When she agrees to spend the summer as the caregiver for his daughter, Lily, she knows it's her last chance to finally make him take notice.

As unexpected circumstances threaten to disrupt his home life, Xavier's desperate to keep his family together. He'll do whatever it takes, even if it means marrying a woman he doesn't love. For Xavier and Lily, Kalli will do just about anything, even at the risk of getting her heart broken in the process.

Little does she know, sometimes love isn't quite as unrequited as one may think. Xavier sees her-he always has. And the vow he made all those years ago never to go there with his best friend's little sister is wavering, and it's wavering fast. When they come up with a plan that leads to wedding bells, it's a no brainer.

This marriage of convenience has one rule: absolutely no falling in love.

Easier said than done. Throw together a girl who believes rules are meant to be broken, and a man whose whole career revolves around following orders and you get a recipe for disaster. What could possibly go wrong?

Excerpt:

Shooting a glare at him, I throw my hands up in exasperation. “Are you telling me that this whole anticipation thing is one-sided? Is it that easy for you to resist? I really need to step up my game.”

Xavier’s eyes fall to my lips for a quick moment before he looks back up at me. I see the desire in his expression, and without him even saying a word, I know he wants this, too. So why is he making me wait?

“You have no idea how much I want to kiss you right now. How many times I’ve thought of doing just that. Every time you were curled up against me on the couch, I wanted to kiss you. Every morning when you showed up, I wanted to kiss you. Every time you said goodnight to Lily and then slipped out my door? I wanted to kiss you before you left. It’s not a new development. The first time I ever saw you, Kalli, I wanted to kiss you. And I’ve wanted to ever since.”

His admission floors me. He’s told me before that he “saw” me, but I had no clue it was from the very beginning. I’m not really sure how to process it. In fact, he beats me to the punch.

“So now you know. This will be just as hard for me, but it will be so damn worth it. Because when you’ve wanted something for as long as I’ve wanted you? It’ll be the best feeling in the world when I finally get it.”

“Our first kiss will be that epic?”

“A first kiss to rival them all,” he quips, grinning at me. He holds his arms out wide. “Now, we’ll start with a hug and work our way up.”

“I feel like I’m sixteen again,” I tell him as I wrap my arms around his waist.

His hands come down to my back and he gives me a big squeeze, my head pressing against his firm chest. I love this feeling of being in his arms, him holding me close. There’s nowhere on the planet I’d rather be than right here with him. As much as I want him, I know he’s right. I don’t care when it comes. Because when it does, our first kiss will be unforgettable.

His chest rumbles as he chuckles. He squeezes me tight one last time before letting me go. “And it’s only just the beginning,” he tells me. “Have a good night, crazy girl.”

I fan my fingers and look up to see Gavin’s hypnotic eyes. I get lost in them for what feels like eternity.
Gavin takes my hands away from my face and gently wipes the tears away. Then he wraps his long, muscular arms around my shoulders, and I allow myself to lean into him. This man, whom I’ve known for about twelve hours, whose wife was killed by my husband, is the only person in the world I have left.

ARC Review: We Can Work It Out (Lonely Hearts #2) by Elizabeth Eulberg

Publisher: Point Imprint of Scholastic
Publication Date: January 27, 2015
Genre: YA Contemporary Romance
Source: Print ARC
Rating: 4 Stars

Synopsis:
When Penny Lane started The Lonely Hearts Club, the goal was simple: to show that girls didn’t need to define themselves by how guys look at them, and didn’t have to value boyfriends over everything else. Penny thought she’d be an outcast for life…but then the club became far more popular than she ever imagined it would be.

But what happens when the girl who never thought she’d date a good guy suddenly finds herself dating a great one? She doesn’t need a boyfriend… but she wants it to work out with this particular boyfriend. And he wants it to work out with her.

Only, things keep getting in the way. Feelings keep getting hurt. Words keep getting misunderstood.

Penny Lane worked hard to declare her independence. Now she needs to figure out what to do with it — and how to balance what she wants with what everyone else wants. In We Can Work It Out, Elizabeth Eulberg returns to the world of her first novel, The Lonely Hearts Club, and gets to the heart of how hard relationships can be… and why they are sometimes worth all the drama and comedy they create.

Review:

Penny Lane is back again, only this time she's got her club and her sweet as candy boyfriend by her side. Balancing out the two is s bit troublesome though; much harder to do than Penny expected.

When I first read The Lonely Hearts Club, I fell in love with the story as a whole. I wish that there was such club that existed because I believe there should be that kind of support amongst young girls and women everywhere. So obviously, I jumped at the opportunity to read the sequel. In We Can Work It Out, Penny needed a good hard slap! I understood that she had duties as the leader of her club but the way she treated Ryan was horrible! He was so patient and kind when Penny would put him second. And she did that a lot.

Everything just kept getting in the way such as going to club meetings, sitting with the club at lunch, and even Valentine's Day has been taken over by, you guessed it, the club! That happened a lot throughout the book until Ryan can't take it anymore. I never totally blamed him either. As I stated before, Penny reallllllly grated on my nerves. I hated how indecisive she was. I love the girl and think
she's great role model but sheesh, learn how to prioritize!

I loved how in this book the club is expanding. Other schools around The Club's school have heard about them and want to know if they could start their own chapters. It gets to be huge and people all over the world want in on it. I think the club is great and for it to get that big, well that's just awesome!

Even though I liked this book, the first one will always be my favorite. Eulberg fans won't want to miss out on this fun story!

ARC Review: Soulprint by Megan Miranda

Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Childrens
Expected Publication Date: February 3, 2015
Genre: YA Sci-Fi
Source: Print ARC

Synopsis:
From the author of FRACTURE, a riveting new thriller which draws on cutting-edge science.

Alina Chase has been contained on an island for the last 17 years—whether that’s for the crimes of her past life, or for her own protection, well, that depends on whom you ask. With soul-fingerprinting a reality, science can now screen for the soul, and everyone knows that Alina’s soul had once belonged to notorious criminal, June Calahan, though that information is supposed to be private. June had accomplished the impossible: hacking into the soul-database, ruining countless lives in the process.

Now, there are whispers that June has left something behind for her next life—something that would allow Alina to access the information in the soul-database again. A way to finish the crimes she started.

Aided by three people with their own secret motivations, Alina escapes, only to discover that she may have just traded one prison for another. And there are clues. Clues only Alina can see and decipher, clues that make it apparent that June is leading her to something. While everyone believes Alina is trying to continue in June’s footsteps, Alina believes June is trying to show her something more. Something bigger. Something that gets at the heart of who they all are—about the past and the present. Something about the nature of their souls.

Alina doesn’t know who to trust, or what June intends for her to know, and the closer she gets to the answers, the more she wonders who June was, who she is, whether she’s destined to repeat the past, whether there are truths best kept hidden—and what one life is really worth.

Review:
That synopsis is brilliant. It's what originally had me intrigued to know more about soulprinting and how unfair it is for one girl to be condemned for something she didn't do. I asked myself, "how is this going to work"? The whole concept is interesting and I was excited to see how the author portrayed everything.

The first part of Soulprint was filled with action; like teeth-biting nail type action. Alina has the soul of a one of the most notorious women in history, June. Because of June's past, Alina suffers from twenty-four seven security, on island where she's kept "safe". Until the day that three brave souls help her to escape the island. But are their reasons for saving her completely honest? Why did they rescue her unless there was something in it for them?

After the initial escape, I found that each chapter dragged. The more it dragged, the more I wanted to stop reading. Eventually, I got the end, which was a tad bit better than the whole first 3/4 of the book. I did enjoy Alina as a heroine. She's brave yet still has a vulnerability that makes her more real and relatable.

The romance aspect of the story was sweet and not over the top. Cameron was a great romantic interest who I immediately liked upon meeting him. The other characters I think gave the story the extra push it needed but I still felt something was missing.

Overall, I think the book was okay. A little to slow for my taste but an okay read all the same.
