Defy by Sara B Larson!!

A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and a thrilling love triangle.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

There is something about YA books that I just love. I may be passed the "age" of a young adult novel but I feel a sort of satisfaction when I read books such as these. Books like The Hunger Games, Fire & Flood, and Thrown of Glass. These stories all have heroines that I wish I was able to read as a young adult. They are fearless, independent, and great role models to young girls. In my opinion.

Sure fairy tales are great; as are damsels in distress but there is nothing at all wrong with women who can fight for themselves. And before you ask, no, I'm by no means a feminist because I can appreciate a man who is still a gentleman. You know, holding the car door open for me and standing up when I leave a know what I mean?

There's still nothing wrong with loving today's literature where girls aren't always the ones who need saving. Maybe just maybe it's the man who needs saving. Or in this case a whole country.

Alexa has pretending to be a boy on the Prince's personal guard. The time came when she had no choice but to chop off all of her hair and pretend to be her twin brothers, brother; instead of his sister. Alexa is the best guard and is easily able to take down anyone she comes in contact with.

The night that Alexa, Damien, and Rylan get captured from a powerful sorcerer; their lives as they know it, will never be the same again.

Prince Damien was a huge yet pleasant surprise. I don't want to spoil anything but he's your typical spoiled prince who has no regards to anyone's feelings. There are instances where Alexa feels like he's a different person but then he's back to be the jerk. I don't know what is it I love about "jerks" but I think everyone will have a hard time resisting his charm;)

Rylan is the loyal friend. The loyal friend who may or may not know Alexi’s secret?? I really like his character because...well...hmmm...
I guess I liked Damien more.

The book is one romantically, action packed and fun read! I'll be patiently(or not)awaiting the second book. Thank you to Scholastic via NetGalley for providing me a review copy for an honest review.
